I doubt, but am not sure, that the rootstock will affect the flavor of the scion.

Like you, I tried rooting 4 twigs that were attached to (unknown) satsumas that I bought (I think) from Wholefoods. Two died; one is still alive (barely - leaves are drooping) and one just put out new growth, so I am optimistic that it has rooted successfully.

That’s great Vlad! I have had more success with grafting vs rooting, which seems strange. I have heard that about the flavor also. Hopefully they will still taste decently, but we shall see.

I wonder how long it will take the satsumas to bear fruit.

Congratulations. You can always change the rootstock down the road if you don't like the flavor.

Laura, congrats! Nice job! I tried grafting a few from the Leaf-and-Stem mandarins in February, but I think my rootstock was too dormant. May try again this late spring as I still see some fruit in the store.

My guess is, much after February, the leaf and stem mandarins you see in the store are Murcott (sometimes marketed as Honey Tangerine). But that's just a guess from what I've read.

Laura look at you go fantastic. Looks like you have grafting down now . The stem mandarins from Spain are soooooo good and seedless you will have to let us know when you try fruit from them .

Since it has already fruited, you should be able to get fruits pretty soon, unless you let it get big first, most don’t have the patience. I use to have patience but when you get older you really don’t give a hoot. A week ago i did something that really surprise me, i found a small container that i bought several years ago , got stashed away, decided to use it. I mix a few tsp's in a 32 gl garbage can, could believe what i saw, little buds starting everywhere. Water in the barrel turn kind of brown. The lable reads a one t-sp per 5 gl water. Talking about potent!!!

Thank you guys! Vladimir, I would be that they biggest one will bloom this year. I have smaller cuttings that have bloomed. I am not sure I will let it keep any though....it is just so small. If it grows a lot this season, it is a possibility because I am very curious as to how the rootstock will affect the flavor. Dave, I have not had as much luck with rooting cuttings as with grafting. I think grafting is stressful and scary, but it seems to work more often. I just need to get physically and psychologically prepared and then just take the leap! Thank you Steve...you have some great looking grafts. I have to say that I am giving my NZL another chance with the fruit for a second taste test. If they taste the way I remember them last year, I may be re-homing that one also. I don't know why, but it just did not do it for me. Hopefully the fruit quality will improve with tree age.

One of these days I am going to do a thorough comparison of all the lemons I have to post for everyone. From my limited experience, and not counting the meyer in the mix as it really is different from the true lemons, the ST and Villafranca seem the most vigorous and have very similar flavor. Frankly, I would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the fruit. I'll post a pic of my Villafranca from my phone. It looks so pretty now agains the backdrop of forsythia blooms.

Dave, thanks for the ID. I did not remember what had been said about those. I do have a murcott, but it has not produced fruit yet. I can compare someday if they both bear. If I don't like mine, I can do what Denise suggested.

Bob, I agree....I guess it will depend on whether or not the little tree can even hold up a fruit. It is a baby - seems like child labor lol!

Mike, like all new things, grafting can be scary. But the worse thing that can happen is the graft does not take but many do take. As when doing new procedures, you learn from your mistakes. Keep a journal to record the scion, rootstock and graft procedure so that you record what you have done and the results..

Jay, I hope you like it and I'm so happy that your graft took. The tree now has three massive lemons on it that are starting to ripen. I will give them another shot and see. I'll report back, but you may love them, who knows. Mike, I find it stressful to graft because I have not done it much. I am sure you can do it and I would agree with Vlad that if you keep a log, it may help. I am not that organized ;)

It's funny that every time I see those mandarins with stems itch to try it again, but I will not. I like the challenge, but don't need more of those.

I tried rooting a couple of the twigs that were attached to satsuma fruit. And one is showing new growth!! So, besides grafting them, you can also root them successfully, although I tried doing that with about 5? twigs before and none took root.

I am amazed at myself that I still get such a thrill when cuttings take root and grafts take. But then again, I am a biologist by birth and by training.

My cuttings of stem-and-leaf mandarins appear to have failed this spring. I think they just get too dehydrated in the store. Whereas a bud (for grafting) probably has enough energy in it and is easier to 'hydrate' once grafted. I don't know. I would have grafted mine, but didn't have enough window of time to do it. Need to pull out all the tools; find the appropriate rootstock; make sure its bark is slipping, etc. etc. Crazy with a kid at home and wife working full time. My time is not always my own to pursue my hobbies!

Bob that’s great. You crack me up with the gonequat!! I just put them in smoothies and sometimes my youngest daughter eats them (the swimmer). She eats anything citrus!

Must be addicting to graft I’d have started grafting everything I saw if I knew how lol laura where did you get the rootstock I’m practicing with a tree thats not Doing much at the moment but the rootstock is in good shape. I’m trying the reverse T method or atleast I think that’s what it’s called lol.
