And tomatoes.....
Comments (33)bumblebeez, I eat them and I give some to my mother, my stepmother and both the girls. I can salsa, make my own catsup, make tomato basil sauce from the recipe Readinglady sent me. RobinKate gave me a really good recipe for Tomato Jam and I always make that too, but mostly I just can them because everyone in the family loves chili in the wintertime and if anyone dares to make chili with store bought tomatoes, The Princess will take a bite and announce "This was NOT made with Grandma's tomatoes". My stepmother likes just canned/stewed tomatoes over buttered bread cubes and Dad used to eat canned tomatoes straight from the jar. Elery likes just macaroni and tomatoes, with some onions, Dad always liked them that way too. Add my fresh tomato sandwiches, several pots of tomato basil soup with basil from the herb garden, a favorite vegetable side dish of zucchini and tomato gratin, Sol's tomato pie, freshly sliced tomato on pizza because I hate, detest and abhor pizza sauce, and I use a lot of them. Any overflow goes to the local Senior Citizen's center, I just set the basket down and anyone who wants some takes them. They are always delighted to have fresh homegrown produce. Arlene, I'm with you, I'm wondering how that genetically modified tomato would taste. We have tomatoes they can ship all the way across the country in the winter and they are sturdy enough to arrive safely, but they taste a lot like the styrofoam tray they are normally packaged on. The proof of success is in the flavor, in my opinion. Annie...See MorePrestige Powerpack or Zephyr Tornado II over 36' Wolf Range
Comments (1)I'm in the decision stage on a hood insert for a 36" range as well, and have looked at both of these plus some others. For what it's worth, I'm so far leaning toward the Imperial, 40" model, largely because of noise factor. I gather from what I've read on this and the appliance forum that the fewer transitions on vents the better and the larger the vent the better, at least in terms of noise. The Imperial, for the sizes we'd need, uses twin blowers, each requiring a 7" vent. Transitioning them to a single 10" invalidates the warranty. At maximum speed (1270 cfm) , the noise rating is just 4.6 sones. That compares to about 7 for almost every other unit I could find and some are more. You mentioned that the Zephyr doesn't look as professional...I'm wondering if it's because the pictures I've seen have mesh grills instead of baffles (which seem to get a better review on this site). If so, I believe you can upgrade to baffles. HTH...See MoreOT: Prayers for all those affected by the tornadoes across the South
Comments (0)I lived in tornado alley in SC. Every time we heard there was weather coming out of Augusta, GA (44 miles from my house down I-20), we battened down. There was never "A nice, sunshine, lollipops and rainbows front is coming out of Augusta today." No, it was flood, tornadoes, torrential rain, ice storms, whatever bad weather you could get, it came from there. I went through a couple of nights hunkered down in the bathtub with my son with a mattress over us while tornadoes passed over our trailer and we listened to the tops of the pine trees in the timber tract two doors down snapping off. That is a scary sound, let me tell you. It sounds like machine guns being fired at a fast-moving freight train. It's not something you ever forget, and firecrackers still make my heart pound. So I'm sending out prayers and blessings for everyone affected by these horrible storms. Been there, done that. Hope I never have to go through it again....See MoreA Great One Passes Over
Comments (14)Appreciate your thoughts Bloominghaus and Nancy. Yardley was such a part of our life. We let him out every morning and had him back in the house with us by 3PM until the routine would start again the next day. Yesterday my DH put down Yardley's usual afternoon meal before realizing he wouldn't be coming in to eat it. It will take awhile to adjust. Again, thanks to everyone for their kind thoughts......Maryl...See MoreLoneJack Zn 6a, KC
