What do you think about coat closets?

Hello again! I have posted my floorplan before and received feedback overall. I'll post it again and this time I have a specific question.
See that coat closet next to the garage entry in the laundry/mud room? What's everyone's general thoughts on coat closets? I'm thinking about getting rid of it and just hanging everything up out in the garage.
Here's my reasoning:
I own a coat closet right now and it's filled with games, fabric, wrapping paper, crafts and tons of other crap that I couldn't even access if I wanted to. I know me... I'm thinking if I stick a coat closet there, I'll fill it with crap. I'm thinking it would be nice to just give that space to the kids' room. There are 3 daughters that will share that room for now. There are additional bedrooms in the basement that I anticipate they'll want to use when they're older, but right now they are 1, 7 and 7. They'll have bunk beds plus a twin in their room.
Also, the laundry/mud room with have coat hooks and a large bench.

I've also got a crafty kid space designated in the basement, for all those crafty things in my current coat closet.

Abfabamy, yeah that's a tower with glass either side. The inspiration for this design was actually taken from this bathroom. http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/6334654/thumbs/Gorgeous-Bathrooms- (Ignore the first four pictures [they're from another bathroom] and see the last picture for the shower). I was trying to replicate that design, with a few changes to suit my personal tastes. I could do a half wall, but was trying to keep as much glass as possible, as I much prefer that look. I think there's enough privacy for the toilet behind the tower, and I doubt two people would be using the toilet and shower at the same time. I dunno, it's getting late here, so I'll fiddle around with the design some more tomorrow, see what I can come up with. Thanks x

You have a very nice plan. I agree by trying to scale your furniture arrangement to the great room. If you're going to use the seating bar at the kitchen, look at how far out into the great room that extends. With windows on one wall, fireplace on another, kitchen on another, entry on another...you have very little wall space...does that work for you? Our original plan had the fireplace to the inside like that. We moved ours to the back wall flanked by windows instead of bookcases. The fireplace box extends outside the house instead of taking up interior space (also with a porch like yours, you could do a two-sided indoor/outdoor fireplace). Then, we bought a flat screen TV to go on a console against a wall -- takes up less room. If you want to sit on your front porch, make sure it's at least 8 feet deep. We live on 4.5 acres and we have a Toyota Tundra crew cab, standard bed truck and it is 19 ft long as an example of a large vehicle. I agree about having two doors and more space between the vehicles. Are you going to have outside storage anywhere? If not, where will you put lawn mowers, tools, bikes, etc.? As others have said...if you already know you don't want to walk through the laundry room, then look at a similar floor plan with a better configuration for that space. If a similar plan has a front load garage, your builder can turn that into a side load with some extra space added. Cameron

jeannekay - my sister is shocked at my low maintenance!! LOL! She is opposite of me that is for sure. I looked at the full length mirror today and thought twice about buying it! LOL! Jennymama- Well, the builder bought the wrong back splash tile and he was leaving for a short vacation this weekend. I went out the house tonight and they came and picked up the wrong stuff so that was a good sign! Tomorrow I am heading out to paint DD's bathroom. I hope it turns out ok. We are doing a fish, ocean, fish kind of thing! LOL! I was walking around tonight and there is so many little things to do but as far as I am concerned they can do them with me in the house! LOL! Let us know if you get moved in!!!!!! Oh wait....it just hit me, the house will be done next week but we won't be closed. Can we move in before we even close????Hmmmmm......

What do you think, one more coat of stain?

I asked the pro doing our floors whether he'd be putting down two coats of stain (after he'd shown us a sample section on the floor with only one coat). He said he only does one coat of stain because doing more than one coat will result in a splotchy and uneven staining job. I pressed him, because on the Minwax site is says to do two coats for a richer tone or something like that, and he said he never does it and it'd be a mistake. Not sure if this is true, but we are relying on our guys experience and knowledge and are going with only one coat. Good luck, the color looks great on my screen, but it always looks different in person.

I find them a necessity for coats and other outdoor gear.

They're even more fun if you can work in a secret passage to another part of the house...

If you eliminate the closet, you can put even more hooks on that wall...and it’s not the formal front entry, so it will be very functional...

In your set up I don't think it needs to go in the mudroom. It doesn't add any value there. The value of the coat closet is for it to be right near the entrance so that guest coats and sometimes even shoes can go in there when people come over.

Your mudroom serves a different purpose and houses things your family uses. I would actually take back the space for the kid bedroom.

I for one would take closed cupboards with interior shelving and place them on the laundry wall. I'd put the vacuum in there, cleaning supplies, and seasonal things your family uses like possibly mittens/gloves depending on location.

I personally feel the need to have a coat closet in my own house because we have a ton of coats. Sure some other stuff ends up in the closet but I would rather stuff be neatly stored in the coat closet than strewn around my house.

For me,, it is a personal thing depending on how you live.

Our coat closet is in the mudroom next to the garage. This is where we come in the house most of the time. We dont have a coat closet for guests, as we use the one next to the main door as a storage zone. When we have guests in the winter time (most often just a few at a time and not large parties on 10 and more), we put their coats on a couch in the office.

I think you should do what you think works for you. We dont have enough information to know that, and I am sure you already know what works for you..

Is your garage heated? Where do you live? We can’t keep anything in garage in winter as it doesn’t stay warm enough in garage for anything to dry.

If you're asking me, I said next to the garage door, inside the house, not in the garage. would never work in the garage here in New England.

Lg222 no was asking Lynn as in her original post o think she referenced the garage as the option vs coat closet. This wouldn’t work here in Vancouver either
