Master Bath — Under-Sink, Slide-Out Drawer Possible?

We are in the beginning stages of planning our Master Bath remodel. I want to maximize storage any way I can. I was thinking of asking for a very shallow (3”?) slide-out drawer directly under each sink, similar to the flip-down drawer in kitchens. But, I want it to slide out so my small lotions and other things don’t spill.

I have done searches for this idea but can’t find anything. I meet with my designer and project manager in 2 days, so I’m trying to get information on whether this is even feasible, in case it’s something they haven’t done before.

Vanities aren't made that way because there has to be space for pipes below the sink. Some vanities have a deep drawer directly underneath the sink but the actual top of the drawer is significantly below the countertop and the drawer has a cutout to allow for the drain pipe. Click through the pictures of this Fresca Tuscany, for example, to see this. Why not put the stuff you would have put in this drawer in the medicine cabinet?

I suppose you could do it if you used a vessel sink and wall-mounted faucet to minimize the pipes below the sink however aren't vanities with vessel sinks a pain to clean up since you can't just push junk that accumulates on the countertop into the sink?

Thank you for your suggestions! I wasn’t decided on a medicine cabinet vs mirror, but the additional storage is a huge plus. My thought for the pull-out drawer was that it would only be about 4 inches deep to hold my creams & lotions. I’m trying to tuck in storage wherever I can. I’m going to look at medicine cabinets now .. any thoughts on recessed vs wall mount?

If you ditch the built-in tub that frees up a couple of options. I think the shower still works best on the east wall. It affords you the best way to get the width and depth that can make it spacious. Although there is the small window in the southeast corner of the shower, it can be accommodated. Plus with the shower door in that location the door swing really doesn't limit traffic or placement of the other fixtures. If you ditch the tub, you could hide the toilet compartment in the old tub alcove. I'd recommend a pocket door, there are times when you'll keep the door open, times when you want it closed, and a pocket door tends to work well on a toilet compartment in that when the door is open for extended times, the swing is not a factor. I did put a freestanding slipper-type tub in blue in the southwest corner of the room. It sort of fits. One thing you can do...the toilet compartment needs to be at least 30" wide. I'm not sure how a scale drawing will turn out, in my drawing above I have the toilet compartment wall projecting about 6" more southward into the room than the wall behind the sink vanity. If you can make the toilet compartment wall flush with the wall behind the double sink vanity, maybe by even pulling the vanity south 6" and using that 6" of back wall space for shallow storage, that would give you about 9 or 10' of continuous straight wall. If you wanted, you could then extend the length of and/or slide the double vanity to the left and center it off the large window on the south wall. You could do that by leaving the shower as is and simply making the vanity counter longer, or you could do a combination, make the shower wider, say 4' wide, and extend and move the vanity to the left. The more you bring the vanity to the left though, the more the vanity countertop will eventually impinge with the blue freestanding tub location. And with traffic entering the bathroom through the door. So if you ditch the tub altogether, it's something to consider.

Very glad I saw this site. I am designing a kitchen in a 7' x 4'-6" space in a Brooklyn apartment. I'm considering the Fisher Paykel single drawer DW installed installed beneath a standard, undermounted 24" wide SS sink in a 36" wide base cabinet with a stack of 8" wide (Inside) drawers to one side. I see no difference here (ergonomically) from bending to fill/empty an regular front loading DW. I could do without a DW but resale is a concern at some point. Since we're all going full electric in the near future. I'm thinking of getting a 24" induction stove/cook top. The cook top would provide additional space to do food prep, etc. Anyone have experience with induction cook tops? Thanks.

Usually a farmhouse sink is about 10" or so tall, the cabinet is roughly 30" so, that's about 18" to 20" of height. Not much to work with, but do-able. You might want to check out IKEAfans.com. It's a message board that has a lot of adaptable ideas in their Modifications board. Check out the link. It is a scanned picture from an older book Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen Idea File published in 2003. Nice Olychick :) I have always loved your vanity and used it as my inspiration. Janelor, I have some clear square and rectangle containers that, contain :) I have liked using the tubs for different thinks. On the left side under the narrow pull out I have cleaning supplies. They just fit under there. On the right side under the narrow pullout I have various other odds and end. In the front I have a long refrigerator container that is about 3" x 14" or something, it fits across the back to take up the depth of the other containers. I leave the center low and store my cleaning rags. The front area between the 2 containers, and in front of the drain, I store a roll of paper towels, upright. In my right narrow upper tray I store my hair dryer, brush, and hair spray. In the Left upper I store odds and ends, light extra toothpaste, mouth wash, hand lotion. And I keep the hand lotion right there at the entry so I can open the door and pump directly into my hand. I don't keep it on the counter. I do have a soap pump installed in my counter so the left upper drawer needs to be kept neat at the back or the contents can bump into my soap reservoir at the back, where it hangs down from under the counter pump. I love it. Olychick has a very nice pull out setup. I think she would post a link to her reveal. Or you can do a search for her reveal, maybe in 2012 or 2011, in GW.

You won't typically find a drawer under the sink because of plumbing. Drawers to left or right are typically what they have for vanities, but your plumbing has to be in the correct spot for those cabinets to work.

You can also consider a toilet topper cabinet for extra storage.

I have a small master bath and for my recent remodel, my goal was obviously to maximize storage.

I had a rollout in the sink cabinet which makes everything stored under the sink accessible. I have drawers on the top of cabinets but doors below but they are fitted with rollouts so are as functional as drawers. When I was designing the cabinets, I could configure then to be exactly the heights I wanted.

I also opted for a medicine cabinet on one side - the door is a miniature version of my vanity cabinet doors.

I have also seen beautiful mirrored medicine cabinets mounted on the wall behind the sinks which would be great for storage but I just have decorative mirror treatment and sconces on that wall. I am short so having to reach up and behind the sink would not have been a convenient storage method for me anyway.
