Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

No strainer with extended flange in Shaws farmhouse sink?

HI there, long time lurker first time poster and I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I've installed a Shaw's 33" farmhouse and have purchased the advised extended flange. I'm now finding that there don't seem to be any strainers or baskets that will work or fit? Do I just let everything run down the drain and not compost food scraps or worry about what the kids might be trying to rinse away? Do I need to just move beyond trying to find a basket style fixture that will fit inside the extended flange? In previous sinks, I've always had both a flange and strainer or basket so it seems like there is something missing. Thanks for any advice.

I'm assuming you have this because you have a garbage disposal?

I'm looking at the catalog and all I see is a stopper for that flange...you are correct that I don't see a strainer for it. That is odd. I would call the supplier that you purchased it from and just ask what they usually recommend to stop cutlery etc. from falling down the drain.

Perhaps the disposal manufacture offers a product that will work.

Assuming you have enough space in your cabinet below, any should do. If you are cramped for space / height due to the placement of the waste line you may need a compact one. Then do you want batch feed or continuous? Continuous is opperated by switch, batch is operated by using a stopper. IMO batch is safer, because you physically cant stick your hand in there while its running (I have kids), but most people prefer continuous. I think most people would recommend a min of 3/4 hp. Just FYI... I looked at the inskinkerator and waste king. i chose waste king because of its reviews (consumer reports), price (decent amount cheaper than insinkerator) and warranty (lifetime warranty). My DW does not like it because it says "Waste King" around the strainer ring in the bottom of the sink. I guess "In-Sink-erator" would have looked nicer to her. LOL...

This is my understanding: "English Bronze" is a Perrin & Rowe finish. Its a PVD finish, very dark brown color, with no subtle highlights. "Tuscan Brass" is a Rohl finish. Its a "living finish" and has no protective covering, so it will change over time and with use. If you use an abrasive cleaner you will remove the patina and end up with plain brass. I would suggest calling Rohl Customer Service and asking their opinion of how the finishes will wear ... 1-800-777-9762, in Irvin, California. IMHO, I would not want a white flange. That platform looks awfully close to the top of the cabinet for an apron sink to fit. They are like 10" deep outside. So the platform would be that far down from the top edge of the cabinet box. In the pic, it does not look like 10" It appears that they just made the platform the same level as the cabinet cutout; the fact is that the cutout is cut by the installer to match the size and shape of the sink. Generally, it's best practise to mount the sink on rails at both ends rather than a flat solid platform. The platform now must be cut to admit the flange, disposal, etc, and cutting a sheet of oriented strand board only weakens it. It's not best practice, more like a "practice run". Casey

Yes, you need the extended flange. Home Depot carries it for about $65 (as opposed to $100 or more through Shaw's). Sink grid is optional. Many of us with the Shaw's choose the ISE Evolution Compact disposal.

@Jeff Smith thank you. I actually tried purchasing that option, but it comes with a flange, so it can't be used with the extended flange. It's super confusing. It says on the site to use the extended flange w/ a garbage disposal, OR to use the strainer, which would seem to indicate it is either or, so I guess it's just one or the other. I'm thinking I just live with an open hole or find an off market basket strainer that will fit? Thanks again.

Yes I think you either use the standard drain/strainer - or you have to use the flange for disposal as you said. Again, you can't be the first person to run into this so I would just call the supplier that sold you the sink and see what they recommend.
