To avoid folding: Install the closet rods that go with the system. Then get hangers for everything you can possibly hang. The closet brand name is probably on the drawers or shelves.

I am a hang it up person, my sister has about 12" of hanging space for dresses, everything else is folded.

She had drawers and shelves that were installed with the system, but she has added a bunch of totes of various sizes that she bought at big lots. Buy everything the have in stock and return what you don't use.

You have no clear organization of things. It's not just shoes that are all over the place; I see pants on top of handbags, bras mixed with shirts. Start by separating clothing from accessories, then tops from bottoms. Get rid of anything you haven't used in the past year, doesn't fit, or needs repair.

I use my closet for hanging clothes—dresses, skirts, tops, jackets and coats. These are clothes that I do not want to get wrinkled, or that are too bulky to store elsewhere. I have a shoe rack on the floor, and I hang extra purses, belts and scarves on special hangers. I also hang my night gowns, but the rest of my lingerie goes into a chest of drawers. 95% of my pants also go into drawers as I only hang pants that are part of a set. It doesn't matter how something is folded when you put it into a drawer. I do have a couple of sweaters that are best folded because they stretch out if hung.

Putting items in a drawer or box is not automatically a fix. Belts and scarves can end up in knots, which is why I prefer to use a specialty hanger. Twenty shirts in a tall box won't stay neatly folded when you have to dig through them. Use a box that best fits the clothing. For instance, use a taller box for folded jeans and a shorter box for folded shirts. Clear plastic is best for finding items, but it won't look as neat as opaque plastic or other materials; labels can be really helpful for those. There are also shelf dividers to keep things from falling over.

Vertical dividers help keep things more organized - a stack of pants, a stack of purses, etc.

I agree with the others that suggested hanging as much as possible. I hand all my tops except sweaters (those go in a chest of drawers).

This looks like Elfa...and their high end version at that. If you have a Container Store near you, they can help you reconfigure and add hanging. I've had Elfa in my past three homes and often move it around based on changing needs. it's really easy to pop it out and move it around. As an example, all the drawer units can be stacked pending their width, shelves can run in a stack next to them, etc. i would go ask for help.

You need more dividers, bins and drawers. Get everything sorted and go from there. I have my handbags on those cheap shelves that hand from the rod- it works great.

Go to Container Store — their 30% off sale is on now! — and get more drawers, and some shelf dividers (if they work with the wood edging, ask at the store). Bring them a picture of your closet and your needs and budget and they will help you make it better.

I put several Elfa closets In my house. My son’s has, I think, 3 banks of drawers across, for his tees, pants, socks, and “unmentionables”, with hanging above, a bit of long hanging to the side (currently holding his graduation robe, how long should we hold on to that lol), and shelves above that for his hats (costumes and normal!) And a stack of shelves on one side that held miscellaneous stuff and shoes. My shoes are on a few long shelves above the hanging. I keep most of them, especially rarely-worn and out-of-season, in shoe boxes, either the box they came in or plastic ones.

Looks like you have a lot of stuff best stored in drawers.

Drawers

Remove everything except the top shelf.

A few inches below that, add a pair of 1"x4" boards horizontally on the side walls of the closet, front to back. Nail the boards to the wall where there are studs. (Stronger than attaching them to drywall w/o stud behind it.)

Use a pair of these -- one on each board, to hang a sturdy rod for clothes hangers.

For your hair care and other personal grooming needs and shoe care products and first aid supplies, plastic drawers can work well -- you can easily see where what you want is located. Buy two of the three drawer sets. Remove the top from one and create one six drawer chest.

These often fit in small spaces in the bath or within a closet or in a corner of the bedroom mostly hidden behind a chest of drawers.

If you are not in the habit of folding or hanging, it would be best to get dividers or baskets then you can just take the basket you want and take want you need- I would tie large labels to the baskets and write what is within each one. You can use large the larger key ring holders and write on them with a marker then tie it with ribbon to each one.
