Are you counting how far the fridge protrudes into the aisle? Or just cabinet to cabinet? Some standard refrigerators protrude 12” into the aisle. Counter depth fridges have doors and handles protruding around 6” into the aisle. Aisle spaces are measured from the furthest protrusion into that aisle. The pinch point is the restricted point, and that is your aisle width. Not box to box.

I could move the island few inches to the left on this area, the lines on the floor is where my table is and that slider door goes to the pool, I am not sure if I will gain much more than 3 or 4 inches and if it would be worthy. ...

Not a pro. I have 39.5” from the front of my refrigerator to a countertop, and it is an annoying pinch point when multiple people are using the kitchen. I wish my kitchen had been designed with 48” aisles.

your kinda stuck unless you redo the island. The island seems too big for your space. For really good flow Anyway. Are you getting a counter depth refrigerator, important to know.

Yes counter depth

A counter depth handles sticks out further than that white tape. Plus the air space needed at the back pushes it out further . I think your island is too large. The space from the island to the table is too small too. That should be 60”. Do you have a measured drawing?

I thought about a smaller island but was talk out of it.😫 now I can't change the size and have to make it work

If the island has to stay the same size, then pull it further away from the fridge. And put a sofa at the window, with a narrow coffee table. Eat in your dining room on a daily basis, and the island for quick breakfasts. The table island space is too small for traffic.

Our island is 48” from our fridge with fridge closed and 32” with doors open. It’s easily enough space to walk past if open but less would feel right

I have the EXACT same layout as you in my kitchen - large island and only 38” from my fridge to edge of my island. I have NO problem opening my fridge and standing comfortably. My fridge front is flush with my cabinets...I sunk it back in the wall and lost a bit of space in my office, which is the adjoining room. It looks like your fridge does not e protrude past the cabinets when closed, so you really should have no problem. And just my 2 cents...I love my large island...I went as large as I could fit and I have no regrets at all.

I tend to fill every inch when I cook. Hope that helps!

You will be able to use the fridge with no problem. But while using the fridge nobody else will be able to pass. If that isn't a problem for you then keep it the way it is.

Thank you soooooo much for your comment, I was starting to panic a bit, I had a large island in the past and I always loved it, I was trying to get the same effect, I am happy to hear that it works for you, I leaning towards keeping the space the way it is

38” minus the 6” that a counter depth sticks out from the cabinet is only 32”. Way too small for a multiple user high traffic aisle. You aren’t measuring accurately.

We use 4'-0" as our standard for an aisle between cabinets and between appliances and cabinets. If absolutely necessary we will go down to 3'-6" but that's the bare minimum.

The long side of my island overlaps the fridge by about the same distance, with aisle width about the same. There is no problem accessing the fridge, since there is plenty of step-back space in front of the fridge. No one can pass when I'm in front of the fridge, but it's an island--they can go around.

My island is exactly 42" from fridge to island. It is 40" from edge of island counter to fridge. With the door open there is 21" clearance and it is fine. Can someone get by when the door is open? No but like mama said, let them walk around. It's an extra 4-5 steps.

As long as you have enough space in your work zone, I think you'll be fine. (I have exactly 48" between my counters at my work zone.

I agree that I'd be more concerned about the clearance from the table to the island. You need 3' between edge of table and wall if there is going to be chairs on the wall side and you ideally should have 60" between the edge of the island and the edge of the table on the other side, but in reality, you can get away with 4'.

I have 45” from my refrigerator to my island. But my refrigerator is a 48” Sub Zero, so I have 18” with the refrigerator open. The setup is perfect, no issues.

From my island to my table is 56”. This is plenty of room. 48” would be a little close.

It is 23” from the open door edge to counter....honestly it’s more than enough space.

My partner can easily slip past me if I’m standing at the fridge...and even if he couldnt, it wouldn’t worry me because honestly I think that is small consideration. I say keep your island where it’s at! I honestly had the exact same concern when configuring my kitchen, but it’s more than ample space. Plus, I love how easy it is to pull things out of the fridge and turn or set them on the counter...very convenient!

So...my dimensions are: from door front to counter is 38”, handles to counter 35”, open door edge to counter 23”...

Out of curiosity, I just measured the width from stove side to island and it’s 37”...again, it may not be recommended width but it still looks large, 2 people can easily pass each other, and it works for me. It’s just 2 adults living in my house, but even at Christmas with 3-4 ppl in the kitchen working areas, it was no problem. I really wanted a big island as I’m the one in the kitchen most of the time, lol

Char71 kitchen is beautiful, I love the modern cabinets, We really have the same set up. I am going to keep the IslaIsland where is, the fridge will be closed most of the time anyway. Thanks again for your input!

You can use the fridge but it might feel snug when others are near. is it ideal? No, and no kudos your KD. ;-). That said, in my old kitchen, I had the same situation as mama goose. The overlap was about 50% of the fridge. My husband just went around the island. It wasn’t ideal, but we had a small, very active kitchen. On the plus side, my landing zone for stuff coming out of the fridge sure was handy.

In our new house, I made sure to have standard aisles everywhere. And we still trip over each other. One of us is constantly STILL going around the island. Habit. So, dunno. Your contractor doesn’t want to be bothered to schooch the island. It probably isn’t worth it at this point. As design errors go, I’ve seen way worse.

Perhaps you are confusing a built in with a counter depth. They are not the same, by thousands of dollars. Any product’s”depth” is measured from the furthest protuberance into the aisle . Add in the rear clearance, and a counter depth is 6” deeper than the surrounding cabinets.

I have 36 inches between island top and fridge front. No problem at all. Leave it alone and I guarantee you won;t care about it later!
