basement humidity
Comments (8)I have used several different makes and models of dehumidifiers. Most of them were noisy and several were short lived-- less than 2 years. My most recent purchase is the Frigidaire FAD740DUD. Much quieter than any other I have owned and apparently much more efficient as it keeps the humidity level as set with much less running. Cost about $240 delivered to my house. If your situation was in my house, I would buy one of the Frigidaire to try and then if I was pleased with it, buy additional units to place in other parts of the basement. I have two dehumidifiers in my basement. Not sure if it will be significant on my power bill, but the sharply reduced running time should help reduce the running cost. I think my old unit was just not doing much moisture removal at the last. Comments (2)As part of mold testing I do and the least invasive way of checking for moisture issues is to use a IR Thermometer which will use a laser pointer to highlight an area I know Harbor Frieght has inexpensive version if there is a store in you area. Point at different areas of wall and cielings etc and the areas with moisture problems will show a few degrees cooler temperature then the other similar surfaces. I would do this after doing as worthy suggested pour some water in your floor drain to make sure the P trap is full so sewer gas is not from the drain. Comments (1)Your situation may be helped by sealing or it may not be- no way to know in advance. But it is virtually certain that a dehumidifier will be required to keep the relative humidity within acceptable levels- about 50%. This because the basement in Summer will be cooler than the outside....See Morewant to finish basement but very humid...
Comments (10)Does any of your plumbing go below the basement floor? Could you have a drain installed? An 'interesting' way to use a dehumidifier with a garden hose would be to put the dehumidifer on a countertop with the hose going to a bucket on the floor, then you put a pump with float activation in the bucket that pumps it outside. A few other things, paint the whole basement in watertite paint and make sure all downspouts empty away from your foundation. Check that grade goes away from the house also. Keeping water away from the house helps keep your basement dry and the watertite will help in stopping moisture from coming in....See Moreksc36
