Convert the garage to a home office and living space
Comments (8)@thinkdesignlive - thank you for your comments, to limit the cost we were thinking to live the garage doors and insulate on the inside only so it will limit the brick work. I really like your suggestion for the door (yes it will be on the yard for sure), it will make more sense as I cannot have only 2 bifolding doors. This is what I thought that I should contact @derdeb1234 - yes the budget is limit and we are not handy but we could increase to 10k. @tartanmeup - yes it is in GBP. @njmomma - Yes I will try to update the work. I still need to empty the garage, get rid of the spiders and insects, etc......See Morehelp! splitting dining room into office / playroom
Comments (16)Not sure why pressure from other family who aren't living in your house would make you rethink what you want in a house if it wasn't on your radar to begin with. I agree with patricia about having living spaces on your main level be living spaces, and having a separate living space without a TV so adults can separate from kids but still be on the same level. I would make the office space your TV room (den). With doors. Kids toys could be in there too. Regarding the office, what does your upstairs look like? How many bedrooms do you have? If you have 4, you can easily convert one bedroom into an office. Most people respond to that by saying "but I NEED a guest room!" If that's your response, think about how often you have overnight guests, and whether you want to dedicate 144 square feet of your house to guests who will be with you a handful of nights each year (when you think about your house as a cost/SF, think about how much money you're spending for that dedicated space, and how many nights in a hotel it would take to recoup). I am planning on converting our guest room into a play room/guest room, with a murphy bed in the closet for the handful of times we have overnight guests each year. You could do the same with a guest room/office combo. Murphy bed or pull out couch or day bed for overnight guests....See MoreIdeas to Convert this room to a home office
Comments (3)I agree with previous comment that if you want the space as a home office, you’ll need to close off one opening entirely - probably whichever is the bigger opening. For a couple reasons. As we’ve learned during quarantine, it‘s not good to have sounds easily transmitted when you are either trying to concentrate on your work or you are on a Zoom call. No one wants to hear in their home office the kids talking, the kitchen blender going, a nearby toilet flushing, or your SO on his/her call in the next room. Also for privacy - people walking by should not be able to see your computer screen showing, say, your bank statement, bills you are paying, confidential information from work, and the like. So close off one wall, and french doors on the other would be my recommendation. Furnishings-wise, I‘d remove the sofa and one or both of the armchairs - you need to add a desk, a spot to put the printer/scanner, and a couple file cabinets. File cabinets don’t have to be ugly, they make nicer-looking ones. Not too big file cabinets - try to be paperless as much as you can. Also a good task light for your desk, and an ergonomic desk chair. I bought an Aeron chair used - new they are $1300+; I paid $500 for a used one for what I think is the best desk chair on the market, but there are others out there for less....See Moreconverting living area to office…help me design it!
Comments (15)Your spouse needs to provide input on how he uses his office space, wherever it is. In the posted pictures, I see all those beautiful tables in the middle of an "office", and they don't look at all like real life. In my office, I have my laptop, monitor (some people have two monitors), docking station, charger for my phone and the cords for all of those. And pads of paper, pens, pencils, a couple of file folders, coffee cup, water bottle, post-its, etc. And envision the cords off the back of those beautiful tables, and all my stuff accidently getting pushed (by me) off the back of the tables. How will your spouse use his space? In my home office (which I'm using about 90% more than I thought I would be), I have an adjustable-height desk with the long side against what would be the long side wall in your pictures, with the short end of the L in the front corner. My monitor is in the corner, and my laptop to the side. I can work relatively undisturbed, but look left and have a nice view out my front window. (My office is square, but I do have a wall of built-in shelves against my "back" wall, the same place your short wall is in your house.)...See MoreGloria Franklin
