Designing a shop with a living area and could use feedback / direction
Comments (10)It's allowed and I'm financing it. I live in an area where it is cheap to build. I don't need financing. I've got the money for all the fundamental stuff and getting a bathroom put in. Then I'll finish things out on the inside over time. Building secondary structures is easy to get away with here with the zoning. I've seen lots of people build a shop to live in until they can build a house. Both here and other places. Pretty common practice. (Sounds like maybe this is a foreign concept to you.) It is allowed I checked. It'd be like a tiny apartment. As far as your horse cart idiom, I've got things in order. I'm asking about what I'm asking about....See MorePlease help me with opening up living room wall to den area
Comments (21)Ditto what Annie said. You are talking about the structural integrity of your house and it looks like you have a second story, and you probably also have a basement. By removing the wall, the beam needs to support the floor above and the roof. And if you're in a "snow zone" that has to be factored in as well. Another thing, walls are distributing the load from above to the floor or foundation. When you remove a portion of the wall, you are creating point loads on the floor or foundation, which may require additional work to your foundation in the form of footings or additional beams below. These are examples of how removing a wall can get complicated. Maybe you are already aware of this. I hope so! Edited to add another thought I wanted to share regarding openings to let in light. You're only going to get sunlight during the daytime. How often are you home during the day when you can benefit from the daylight? Painting the paneling and better lighting in the family room will to wonders for making the room look brighter. Also, consider replacing the back door with a slider. That will allow more light into the family room. This advice is coming to you from someone who is considering taking down walls to let more light into her dark family room. :) But I've been in my house a long time whereas you haven't even moved in yet....See MoreMain Living Area Decor/Design Help!!!
Comments (20)The brown chair looks isolated and small by itself in comparison to the visual weight of the sectional. If you consider the last photo in the Susan Davis post, that chair is larger and has a pattern fabric and accompanying ottoman with it that balances better, visually, its sectional. The arrangement of the pieces and the artwork on the walls also create more visual balance in that room....See MorePlease help design this open concept kitchen and living area !
Comments (0)I am buying new furniture for this open concept kitchen and living. I want the result to feel cozy and functional. Any ideas? I am attaching pictures and measures. I like to have a table in the living room area where I can do crafts, work at my computer etc., I dont want it to be a space just with sofas and coffee/side tables. I am also sending this link because I think that a console table like the one in the picture might be a good way to separate my living-capeted area from my kitchen/tiled area. But if I do this in the living, what about the tiled/kitchen area? What would be a good use of it? It seems to me I would need a table there... https://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional-living-room-traditional-living-room-new-york-phvw-vp~18825494?share=clipboard Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!...See Moreahrdrh
