Help choosing area rug
I am good at finding rugs I like but I'm not sure what does and doesn't work with our room. We just purchased a new Taylor King sectional for our family room and need to get a new are rug. The sectional is an L shape with an inside area of 82" x 56". I was thinking a 5' x 7' rug? Also, what color(s) should it be? The new sectional is gray (see pic) with light blue and coral colored throw pillows. The curtains are white(ish) with the same light blue that is in the pillows. The walls are gray too but I'm considering changing to a much lighter shade or maybe even white. Any help would be much appreciated.

Comments (9)The front legs at least should be on the rug of the couch and any chairs. The rug does not have to go all the way to the TV console, but make sure that the rug is large enough. A rug that is too small will look skimpy and will actually make the room look smaller. Ask me how I know! Comments (5)I think a contrasting rug is a great decision, it’ll really bring a wow factor to your room. Cute doggie. :) I love the third one — I’ve seen it before and think it’s beautiful. (Ignore the size in my mock-up, I wasn’t able to use a bigger one.) I wasn’t able to mock-up the other two, but saw them in rooms (you’ve probably seen these pics already) ... Both pretty rugs, but I don’t think they come near the other one. While looking those up, I did a couple of other quick mock-ups with rugs that caught my eye. All the other rugs are old wool Orientals (except the hide) and the new one is what nylon, polyester and an ordinary on-line/HomeGoods purchase. Replace it with another with the same quality of the others. Comments (21)Sort out the piano first. The way the lid opens now, you're throwing the sound against a hard surface, the wall, not out into the room. The pianist has their back to the room, and you have no softening elements like a rug under the instrument, drapes at the windows. I would move the loveseat into the bay window so the piano can be turned to get the most out of it. Here's a nice way to handle the drapes and sofa in the bay....See More

4 years agoAgree with d_gw. Do you want to add some color with the rug? When you said coral, my ears perked up because I love orange-y colors and think they look so good with gray and blue tones. :)
This is actually more red than coral, but I really like it with your decor, especially adding some gold in with your cooler tones in there (it ties in well with your pretty wood corner cabinet) ...

4 years agoThanks for the response. To be clear, the sectional is being delivered in 2 weeks so the couches in the picture are gone. We also have an upholstered chair (pattern) to go in the corner where the chair and a half is now. I always thought our style was traditional or transitional but i'm not certain. One thing i'm sure of is we both dislike the modern look. Here are some rooms we love.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoPerhaps a solid jute or sisal look rug with lots of texture? The trick would be finding the right shade to work with the cool gray and the warm accents.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years ago@Theresa Janssen The corner cabinet was here when we moved in. The previous owners used this room as the formal living room. We were planning on taking it out at some point. The coffee table, side tables, and console table (using for AV) are all a dark espresso color. The coffee table is actually open with shelf underneath, you just can see from the pics i took. The table lamps are also going to be replaced so i like your idea with the clear glass ones.

4 years agoTo help visualize size i put this drawing together. It is pretty accurate. I used the exact dimensions of our furniture we ordered. Only potential changes are the corner cabinet coming out and the console table added in bottom right corner (not yet purchased so can be nixed).

4 years agoUpdate!! Furniture is here. I also ripped out the corner cabinet as well. So back to the rug. Current one in picture is 5x7. Thoughts on size of new rug now that you can see the furniture size and layout? I will also be painting this weekend. Wall decor will be rearranged or removed also so please ignore. I was looking at purchasing the lamps below as well.
