Pedestal sink, console or vanity?

I’m starting a bathroom renovation. 5 x 7 main bathroom, used mostly by me. Husband uses master bath. I currently have a pedestal sink, but thought a little storage would be nice. I’m not sure if a 24” wide vanity would make the space feel more closed in. Anyone have this same setup? ...

Thinking about this? Or...

Open to suggestions, unfortunately no room to expand. Thanks!

24" vanity will add needed storage. I would go for it. I'm only a fan of pedestal sinks (a) in a guest powder room, where storage is not crucial or (b) in a bathroom large enough that there's room for storage elsewhere.

So it seems you have 54 inches to fit a toilet and sink. Most towns require 30 inches for your toilet which leaves you just the 24 inches left. My daughter is in the same boat, but her layout is different. I'd suggest you get a large box and put it over your current pedestal to see if the square space if will create will allow enough room to get around the toilet, or if the round pedestal gives you more room. Seems you have a cabinet outside the bathroom. Any chance you might want to bump out?

When you're both getting ready, are you both using the sink? For me, I would prefer the single sink with storage over a narrow double pedestal with less storage. While I do have a double sink and I like having it, I would like it a whole lot less if I did not have enough counter space or storage. We rarely are both using the sinks at the same time. I just enjoy being able to have a more pristine sink that's "mine" even though we are usually not both using sinks at the same time.

sweeby, Your bathroom is one of the nicest I've seen. I love the arch, and the serene look. I agree that your sink looks wonderful in the room. Your room is somewhat larger than mine, though, and you have a wall that the wide sink fits against. I have a wall that is barely 5' long which has to have the toilet and sink. My current sink is 24" wide, and it is about one inch from the toilet. The toilet is about 10" from the other wall, because in the corner there is a jog-in to fit our sewer pipe. Doing a console sink at all will require that I replace the old cast iron radiator, which is next to (under, really) the existing sink. I'm probably going to do this, anyway. So I won't be able to use the sink you have, unfortunately. I absolutely love it. I've also learned that the Porcher sink that I like comes only in 27" width, so I'm not sure it will fit.

OMG, I can't believe they make a special recessed cabinet for plungers! Anyway, something like that would actually work really well. I'm not sure how much recessed storage I'll be able to have, though, because I have no idea what's in my walls. As you can see, the current medicine cabinet over the sink and that hamper are recessed, but that's partially because the lower half of the walls are built out with cement, and that's being torn out in the remodel. Perhaps that Hy-dit would fit in the old hamper space... Gscience, I agree with you that non-recessed cabs can make the place look smaller. I'd like to recess a cab in the spot where the blond wood cab is not - if I can't, I may just put a mirror there. I'm also planning a much larger medicine cabinet over the sink - don't know if I'll be able to recess it, so I guess I'll wait to buy anything until my contractor starts tearing things up... Anyway, thanks for the ideas, ladies - keep 'em coming!!!!!

Thank you both for your thoughts.

Design girl, that‘s the only linen closet we have, other than in master bath. It‘s only 22” wide, then there’s a doorway to living room. Small house.

My other thought, was to have the contractor build storage in between the studs on the blank wall on the left. Then attach a picture with hinges for access.

Without a doubt add a 24” vanity with storage! It will not feel more closed in at all. I like the first one you posted with the 2 drawers best. Very nice.

@Kitch4me - Wall storage is a great idea for small items. In this picture, they have to be pretty or you need the door, but there are so many clever ideas now.

Vanity for *sure*, and I'd even consider replacing the mirror with a medicine cabinet for all the rest of your stuff, if you really use this every day!

Here is another current pic...

My plan is to replace the wood mirror with a recessed PB medicine cabinet and remove the medicine cabinet to the right of the sink. I need to decide between the gold or polished nickel? I had to stand in the tub for this shot...lol

Like it if you can fit it. But if you do gray vanity do black trims or chrome.

Absolutely find a pretty 24" vanity that gives you good storage. You might want to look for one that has a drawer or two on the bottom and a cabinet on the top. The plumbing pipes for the sink will make a drawer on top useless for storage. I also would purchase the 21" x 34" Pottery Barn Medicine cabinet. You might also look at hotel style towel racks that would fit over your toilet to give you space for extra towels. I don't know what is on the wall opposite your toilet and toilet. Is that where you have a towel rack currently?

Ephross, just a blank wall for now. I’m considering hanging a picture on that wall with possibly a towel bar under it.

I do like train racks, thanks for the suggestion!

A vanity no matter how small gives you storage. I love hotel or train racks for extra towels in small bathrooms and no towel rack just hooks . This would be a perfect spot for your make up I would think. A 60 cm vanity from Ikea has awesome storage
