Pedestal or console sink with backsplash in small bathroom?

I'm looking for a white sink for our very small (5' x 5.5') full bath. I've ordered the tile with a 4 week lead time, and now am in a rush to order everything else. I'd been planning on a pedestal sink, either Kohler Memoirs or one by Porcher, but it occurred to me that a console sink with metal frame including towel bars might make sense. But I'm wondering whether it might look too massive.

I'm also thinking of using a sink with a backsplash, since we won't be tiling the entire room. I saw a Porcher model that I liked.

Any advice? Our house is a 1931 center hall colonial.

We put a large console (36") in a pretty small bathroom (just over 6' x 6') and I really like the look. It does look kind of large in the space, but in a good way. A large beautiful item looks much nicer than a large eyesore, if you know what I mean... There's a picture of our console near the bottom of the Sneak Peak thread.

Hi Lotterticket, thanks, oh that does look nice, I'll show it to DH, I posted on my blog and others said the same thing as you suggest. Hi Nancylouise, thanks, I'm afraid if I add too much more dark tile the room will be too dark looking and we have some large tiles left, but no small tiles here's a photo of the shower which is slightly darker than the floor

We did not tile the side walls in any of our bathrooms because we aren't overly fond of that look, though I have seen bathrooms here and elsewhere with tiled side-splashes that look terrific. We made sure to use good quality, scrubbable paint in our bathrooms (we used BM Aura Bath and Spa paint; matte finish), and it seems to be holding up well*. Over the sink in the guest bathroom, we used our border tiles from the shower as a backsplash (3" high?). In our MB and hall bathroom, we tiled up to the ceilings--that decision was more for aesthetics than necessity. *I did end up scrubbing and touching-up (re-rolled) one small section of the wall between the vanity and the doorway molding in our MB after an unnoticed splatter of benzoyl peroxide gel/cream left permanent light colored spots on the wall. The section of wall next the sink/counter has been fine.

You would definitely need to get a smaller mirror to have more space, but I see many issues with your space when comparing it to your inspiration. Where will you end the backsplash on the right side? Does the left side have a wall as a natural ending? Honestly, I agree that a four inch corian backsplash is the way to go here.

We did mirrors all way down-it's easy to clean I agree with Debbi not a fan of backsplashes myself, not in the bathroom..well depends on one's space of course. we also have a marble countertop, shaped floor tile..didn't want to add another material hard to say about the exact distance between the light and the top of the mirror..I'm sure there are standard suggestions somewhere, and one can find them, with some research and googling..but I just eyed it..whatever looks like it works usually works.

sweeby, Your bathroom is one of the nicest I've seen. I love the arch, and the serene look. I agree that your sink looks wonderful in the room. Your room is somewhat larger than mine, though, and you have a wall that the wide sink fits against. I have a wall that is barely 5' long which has to have the toilet and sink. My current sink is 24" wide, and it is about one inch from the toilet. The toilet is about 10" from the other wall, because in the corner there is a jog-in to fit our sewer pipe. Doing a console sink at all will require that I replace the old cast iron radiator, which is next to (under, really) the existing sink. I'm probably going to do this, anyway. So I won't be able to use the sink you have, unfortunately. I absolutely love it.

I've also learned that the Porcher sink that I like comes only in 27" width, so I'm not sure it will fit.
