What's your favorite thing to plant in your pots/containers?
Comments (21)CMK, that is interesting about eggplant liking pots. I started planting a salad garden in pots and window boxes on my back deck a few years ago. I didn't really think about eggplant though. I'll have to try it this year. I find that leaf lettuce does very well in window boxes. I also grow baby cukes in pots and let them trail down the deck railings. I've also done peppers and tomatoes in pots. I mix in a few small pots of nicotiana (not near the tomatoes...does that really cause problems?? i've heard they should not be combined) so the hummingbirds come to feed. Woodyoak, how deep are the windowboxes you use to grow carrots? And which carrots do you choose to grow in them? I've been seeing more pictures of large pots in amongst plants in the garden and I think I may try to experiment more with that. Does anyone have pictures of pots fully incorporated into their perennial/shrub borders as a focal point? Also, does everyone in wintry climates bring their pots inside in the winter? Has anyone found a type of pot that does not crack with the freeze/thaw cycles of winter?...See MoreWhat is your favorite pot luck contribution?
Comments (17)I mix between three . . Broccoli Salad I used craisins(dried cranberries), broc florets, crumbled crispy bacon, sunflwr seeds(last time I used glazed cruchy almonds with great success), granny smith apples(peeled & cubed, tossed in vinegar to prevent browning), and dressing (vinegar, mayo, sugar). Add the bacon and seeds just before serving. I am always asked for the recipe. The other "standard" is my Cowboy Caviar. Basically, an uncooked salsa (tomato, cilantro, onion, garlic, lime, vinegar) then add 1 can each sweet corn, and black beans (both drained). Adjusting the acid (I love zing), and if I know people can take the heat, I used increase that, too! Serve with Tortilla "scoops". And a third . .Fruit salsa. What every fruit and berries and looking good. Usually Strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, granny smiths, 3 tblspn fruit preserves. Slice tortillas with pizza cutter, spray with cooking spray *butter flvr is best* and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, then toast in 350 oven for about 8-10 minutes (till lightly brn)....See MoreHow are you making out with your Instant Pot?
Comments (20)bpathome, the Instant Pot does release steam out the top. Mine never makes a mess, though--it's just steam that goes upward, there is no water or residue on my counter that I've ever noticed. terriks, the IP is a pressure cooker that can also be used as a slow cooker and a rice cooker. I've had one for a year now and I use it multiple times per week. It is great for soups, cooking dried beans without presoaking, making mashed potatoes and hardboiling eggs so they are very easy to peel. I love that I can make soup really fast after I come home from work and I can steam a whole sweet potato for the baby in under 15 minutes. I feel like the IP does save time but for me the primary advantage is that it takes no supervision. I put the soup ingredients in and close the lid, set it for 15 minutes and walk away. Since I am often multi-tasking while I cook, it has saved me time in not having to go back to check if the soup is simmering, adjust the temps, adjust the lid, stir, etc. I've also made mac and cheese in it but did not feel it was any easier or tastier than the traditional way--it was the same and took the same amount of time. We do not cook meat but I can only assume that it comes in very handy for meat dishes, too. Here are the down sides: 1) the steam does vent straight up. If you don't have an island, I think the steam frequently venting under/in front of your cabinets might not be the best thing for them. If you are standing there when it vents you can divert it, but that negates the "no supervision" benefit. 2) It is big-ish and heavy-ish; unless you leave it on the countertop, you will be lifting it. My favorite large soup pot is a Le Creuset, so it's not a lightweight option, either, but if you have carpal tunnel or something, you might want to consider the weight and where you will store your IP....See MoreCheck Your Instant Pots....
Comments (16)Same here, Melissa, mine is nothing like that one, either. HOWEVER, after having purchased a small one, I realized I probably wasted my money. It isn't something I use very often. Not cuz there's anything at all wrong with it, but rather because of the way I cook. Some days, I know right away what's for dinner. Many days, at noon I happen to think, what's for dinner. Sometimes it comes to me. And sometimes at 3 pm I'm thinking what the heck is for dinner. Many days, I'll think I'm going to make such and such only to realize at noon or 3 pm, NO, I am definitely not in the mood for that. I might be planning all day the day before that we're going to have salisbury steak tomorrow, for example and at noon the next day go, "NO way. We need grilled cheese with tomato soup." Everything in my cooking world depends on my taste bud yearnings at the moment. I hate it! But that's the way it goes for me. LOL SO. That's why I don't use slow cookers or my new IP often. LOL again....See More- 6 years ago
