Bought my first orchid! HELP!
Comments (2)Phalenopsis are very easy to grow in indirect light. They are the shade lovers of orchids. You would need to make sure that they get very filtered light under your magnolia. They should be considered like a redhead with freckles at the beach -- they burn easily. They would probably be better in pots as they prefer more moisture than some orchids and would dry out pretty quickly in a basket. When you water you need to be sure you don't leave water in the crown of the plant as it can rot overnight. In Florida you should protect your orchids and take them inside if you don't have a greenhouse when it gets cooler than 50 degrees. They do like moisture but don't keep them soaking wet. If you stick your finger into the media and it comes out wet don't water. You just want to keep it wet. As far as fertilizer you would probable do well with a timed-released fertilizer like Dynamite or Nutricote. It comes in little pellets and is good for new growers as it will keep you from overfertilizing. Hope this helps. Orchids are very addicting. You may want to join your local orchid society and they are fun and a great way to learn. Pat Here is a link that might be useful: GOOS...See MoreHappy story: my sis just bought her first house
Comments (3)Definitely beginner's luck! Meanwhile we had three houses sell out from under us when we were looking, and are still hunting for a cottage almost two years later. It worked out great for them because this house is head and shoulders above the listings she was showing me in a similar price range. Like, tiny one story cottages that looked like they were last updated in the 1970s compared to this updated 1.5 story. They did have to make a few compromises of course but nothing major. They never thought they could get something so nice....See MoreI just bought my first house plant (Dracaena) - help me not kill it
Comments (18)You have to know what you're doing with rescues. And the success rate is lower than with healthy plants bought new. In addition, there is sometimes a good reason why the plant was thrown out (pest infestation, fungus, mold, other contagious diseases, etc.). Not everyone wants to hunt though things thrown out, take those risks, and wait years for a lovely mature plant (assuming that even happens). As Caro123 says, sometimes you just want a nice plant. If I were getting a first plant, I'd want to know it was healthy so as to give myself and the plant the best chance at a happy relationship. Also, when you're new to a field, it's hard to know what a good price for something is. And that is a beautiful, big, healthy-looking plant. I don't think we should be too hard on No Thanks, just help them along as requested. No Thanks, it's good that you came here. Comments (26)I love the clean, uncluttered look of your home and you've made some great furniture choices. My first thought, though, is that I would try to rework the sofa/sectional placement. It really is unwelcoming looking to me to have the back where it is facing a wall, when it could be oriented to look into the room and out the windows. It seems like if it were placed in the corner under the stairs that it would feel open and invite you to come in and sit. I'd hate to be cooking in the kitchen and have the family or guests with their backs to me. If you are having a TV in another room close by, do you need one in that room, too? If, so placing a 70" unit will probably only work as you have it. But, to me, it's not going to look like a living room but more like a movie theater, which is fine if that's what you're going for. It seems like it won't be a cozy conversation area, though. I might actually flip the rooms and put the dining room where you have the sofa now. I was looking at lights used with dining rooms and ghost chairs and saw this, maybe would work in the living room? Kind of fun. don't know if it would look as good without the colored walls though. And I thought something like these were interesting to consider for over your table:...See MoreBrandi
