Comments (5)SoFL Rose z10 - bigger than they are? wow! can't wait for that! cecily - I do have a rose that is really strong, that my husband swears doesn't smell, so i get that! This was the 1st rose I've ever planted, so I am always weary and nervous over it...but mostly was worried if I had the right rose!...See MoreIs this Don Juan climbing rose?
Comments (5)Yes, it is beautiful! I grew Don Juan for years, but the area it was growing in became too shady and it was time for it to go. My Don was fragrant, but not as fragrant as many other roses. Also in cool weather it was very dark red, almost blackish, at the base of the petals. Also while listed as a climber it had very stiff tall canes and would stand on it's own. Only after it became very tall did I use some rebar to stake it. But yours may become more rigid with age. The shape of the leaves and thorns are often as telling as the flowers as to the ID and since I don't have it anymore I can't say for sure about that, but they look right as I remember them. As Sylvia says the rose folks could probably tell you. But then you know what they say -- "A rose by any other name ..." In this case, no matter the name -- it is lovely, but it might be fun to know for sure. Include these photos and some closeups of the leaves and thorns when you post over there and let us know what they say. You could try either Name This Rose or the Roses Forum ....See Morerose rosette on don juan
Comments (15)Kali, your DJ looks fine but unfortunately you will probably lose that lovely basal break over the winter. Unless it has several more weeks to harden off before you get hard freeze the soft tissue in that cane will freeze and die. Not to worry though, it looks like your DJ is ready to climb and will put out new canes next spring! Ken, I'm really surprised you haven't seen any bagged roses around there. They are every where here in Metro Detroit. All the big box stores (HD, Lowes, Menards and Tractor Supply) get them in in early March. Places like Walmart and Meijers have them too. I've even seen them in fruit markets and Krogers! They're very cheap, both in price and quality, but I have gotten some great roses out of them. Just go in knowing that at least half of the time they are mislabeled and you can end up with a lot of mystery roses on your hands....See MoreDon Juan Rose - train or don’t train
Comments (5)If you have the room go ahead and spread it out for more bloom. Find something, a trellis or obelisk, to tie it too. Start bending those canes early when they are very young and flexible and short. As they grow out keep bending them in the direction you want. You have to keep at it consistently as the cane grows. Once it has hardened off it's too late. Your roses and photos are gorgeous!...See MoreNHBabs z4b-5a NH
