Comments (6)The newspaper is not an essential part of this project depending on the depth of the mulch put down. Newspaper, or cardboard, keeps any plants it is placed over from getting the sunlight they need to grow and if the mulch layer is 4 inches deep or more that will do the same thing. Block a plants access to sunlight and it will die. "Weeds", unwanted plants, will grow in what ever space the can. While mulches help in suppressing this unwanted growth it does not necessarily stop that growth. Mulches serve 4 purposes, 1. aid in "weed" suppression, 2. aid in soil moisture control, 3. aid in soil temperature control, and 4. aid in adding organic matter to the soil. kimmq is kimmsr...See MoreHow could I mess it up but think I did
Comments (15)The English buy the peas in tins, usually. But, dried would be this : http://m.tesco.com/h5/groceries/r/www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=276415352 They are usually eaten with : fish and chips where you buy them from the chippie, or with pies but I think only really in London. Could be wrong, but where I come from (Oxford), we don't eat them. It's a more northern thing....See MoreDid I mess up?
Comments (5)Egg cartons, which hold at most a tablespoon of soil, are highly inappropriate for seedlings. Your plants will do OK, though. Just take a tablespoon, scoop them out gently, and replant in a responsible sized container. You'll lose some roots, but they'll grow back. Also peat pots are well understood to be poor containers for seedlings. They don't decompose in the soil as readily as we're told they do. If you keep your other plants in peat pots until plantout, tear the pots off before putting the plants in the ground....See MoreDid I mess up my roses w/ the bougainvillea leaves and wood (mulch)
Comments (0)Completely new to gardening. I had a bunch of bougainvillea leaves and wood that I been broken down for days/years. I added it around my rose as a mulch, and mixing it up into the soil because that area was hard clay. Should i not have done that? It's a small area and i can easily dig it away, but wanted to check before doing so. Also, what would be good for cracked clay soil? I'm thinking bark mulch, but the nursery recommends compost and gypsum. This is a bit too expensive for me right now....See MoreDebbie Laird
