Three or four drawers in lower cab? Drawer heights?
Comments (18)I ended up going with 4 drawers in all my drawer banks and all fo the base cabinets in my main work areas are drawer banks. I measured EVERYTHING and found there were only 5-6 things that I planned to store in a drawer that wouldn't fit, and so I am planning to store them either in uppers, in the sink bases (will have separate trash pullouts), or nearby in some base cabinets that are only 17" deep. I, too, struggled with the problem of getting banks of different configurations to look right together. I finally just decided all drawer banks would be 6,8,8,8 which will give me about 4,6,6,6 of actual drawer height. I keep second guessing my decision, but then I go back to my list of measurements and feel reassured. I figure I can always get a couple new drawer fronts and reconfigure if I hate it....See MoreLower cabinet only charging, desk/personal stuff
Comments (6)Thanks for the desk stuff thoughts. Good thought on the pantry. I don't want my main set up there as I want to be with the view and I move back and forth between kitchen tasks and my laptop etc a lot. But a file drawer in the pantry fir project type stuff could free up space for the stool with a thin drawer or two in the kitchen. I'm thinking of putting the base of the home phone system in the pantry (one plugs into a phone line then we have a Few handsets). I don't want phone jacks or phones out in the kitchen. Might put a electric outlet for a handset in a hitch cabinet but no phone jack. Nobody calls us on the house phone only junk calls (despite being on the do not call list we still get some surveys etc) and reminder calls for doctors appointments I think the house phone is going away. On the Paprika it can save with one click for most recipes online. If it doesn't work you can highlight sections then click on buttons to tell it which part of the recipe it is (ingredients, directions etc). However, they recently had an update and now it can do just about any recipie (used to work with a fairly long list of sites but not everything with the one click). I also used to use MacGourmet and imported into Paprika. No digital version of the recipes? You might try googling and seeing if you can find them online then they'd be easy to add. If not scanning the print outs as PDFs might let you copy and paste in (it would need to be with OCR optical character recognition so it scans as words not images). Family recipes I have typed in and added my own pictures. I love how easy it is to add recipes (there are a few different ways to do it the built in web browser is one but you can add a bookmarklet tool to your regular browser and there is a safari share extension for the iPhone and iPad where it can show up as a choice where the print, email this etc options show up).. But I'm a bit guilty of being more of a collector than maker. I collect tons that I don't try but it is nice to have a big pre-culled collection of recipes that interested me. It's my first spot to look when I'm looking for something new and so easy to add that why not collect a lot! I still get a few cooking magazines that I like to flip through but I then go to the web site and get the online recipe to save to paprika....See MoreFeedback on Floorplan?
Comments (7)All good points mentioned above. I'd keep the range on the same wall as the sink, for ease of moving prepped items, and also for easier venting on the exterior wall. Do you have a supplier for shallower than standard uppers? I'd put shallow uppers on the fridge wall, for convenient snacks near the fridge and MW. We have vintage 10" uppers on one wall, and they hold a lot of stuff--small baking items in one section, vitamins and other pharmaceuticals in another. They aren't deep enough for plates, but they accommodate gallon jars, in which I keep grains and flour, to keep bugs out. In the following version of your layout I added shelves on the sink wall, along with the expanded window, and left off the angled cabinet. I added a trash pull-out to the right of the sink, and took a few inches off the drawers under the prep space to make the base on the right of the range wider:Is the piece behind the table an existing item you want to keep?...See MoreLower Cabinet Drawers Too Wide?
Comments (56)I couldn’t agree more with the latest comments. I only have the best of intensions but at the end of the day, it’s your kitchen. You need to do what works best for you and your family. But I make one my last post for a prep sink. I highly recommend a prep sink on the island as @mama goose_gw zn6OH mocked up with the green lines. You won’t need to cross into the cleaning zone where the kids will be working WHEN you need access to the sink to rinse vegetables or drain a pot of pasta. Personally, I don’t like the thought of carrying a 5+ gallon stock pot (homemade tomato sauce or chicken stock) and risk burning a small child who runs into my legs. I was that child and I am fortunate I only have a burn scar the inside of my ankle; at least on the my front of my body that I can see. This might be going overboard but you can train your family to call out “HOT BEHIND” when ever someone needs to pass through. I come from a large family who likes to cook. I have 3 sisters, 2 foodie BILs, a mom and MIL. We trip over each other in the kitchen and push our way through each other to access to the sink whenever we try making a meal together. As kids I didn't really notice the lack of a prep sink but as adults, I find it more pleasant to cook with them when we each get our own sink. One person can be prepping while another person is washing up. And there’s aways a free sink to wash hands or rinse a glass. It was one of my many must haves. If you still don’t see the need for a prep sink, please at a minimum, look into how much work it will be to add into later if you change your mind down the road. Like, how will it be vented and drained. Do you need a new drain stack or can they tie it into the existing sink drain. Will you have odd shaped bulk heads in the room below the kitchen. Also I’m very glad to hear you’ve decided to move the microwave out of your prep zone. You don’t want someone trying to open the microwave while you're working with a sharp knife in your hands. I know; I'm over the top. I worked in a kitchen before so I’ve seen my share of cuts and burns......See MoreLynda Cushman
