Comments (32)DtD: I bought the Green Heron from Plant Delights which says that it's a hybrid of H. niger and H. argutifoliius (Corsican). It seems to have inherited the niger early blooming. I've only had it a couple of years but it's been a joy. I don't think any other of my hellebores has buds, but I'll have to look closer at the ones lurking behind the Itea. I've always been leery of niger because of the reports that it hates acid soil, which I have in abundance. Actually, I should have my soil tested again since I've been amending it heavily with compost and the pH may have drifted up. Comments (16)Very striking scenes, NHBabs, with colors so different from the exuberant colors of a few months ago. There's a quietness about them that's very calming. We got significant snow yesterday and last night, and I thought I should show how my house looks now to compare with the photo I posted at the beginning of this thread. The junipers and grasses are mostly squashed down by the snow. This morning as the sun was rising the shadows marked the snow on the deck. And the bay is always in motion. As I was busily shoveling the paths I hit a roadblock - at least one rose in the alley was bent over by the snow and I couldn't get by without getting shredded and I couldn't get close enough to shake off all of the snow and push the rose back up. I'll wait until it warms up enough to melt the snow and, if I can't get the rose back in place (unlikely) I'll do some serious pruning. We had somewhere between 12 and 17 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and it's turning cold now. I noticed the snow is creaking when I walk on it - which is unusual for here on the relatively warm coast where snow is more likely to squish than creak. Comments (43)Babs, I was at Arnold Arboretum last weekend for the first time in about 15 years. [g]. I now have to go more often. I want to go after snow and then in the spring too. I saw a Fothergilla by the entry gate, that was planted in 1934 and it was in excellent shape. And an 'Elizabeth' Magnolia that was huge. I did not know how large they get. I hope I can get there to see it bloom. I've been wanting a witch hazel for the longest time. I think I have a place for it, but it's not full sun. I think that has to go on my list for the spring. 'Arnold's Promise' seems to be the one i want, but I do like that 'Winter Champagne', Claire. I really want fragrance and big flowers. OH, right - leaf retention. I really don't want leaf retention. Now I remember why I haven't bought one yet. [g] The only thing I have blooming indoors right now, is Rosemary. I can't find my camera. I should be finishing up my seed order right now, but I'm going around in circles, on what to order from who. Oh well, back at it....See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens - A Photo Thread - October 2019
Comments (48)The sun is out this morning, despite a frosty 32 degrees @ 6am. It's warmed up a little and the wind has died down. I was able to get a few photos of color around the yard. The way the trees are situated around us, when fall arrives, they block the sun a lot more. My front bed is full sun all summer but in fall there are 3 hrs during the day that the top of a neighboring tree shades most of it. Which isn't a problem in the front, but in the back, it makes it impossible to plant fall crops. That's a pretty color on that Azalea, Deanna. And I like that Bolero Mum.
