Comments (45)I know we've moved on to January landscapes now, but I just wanted to comment on some of the gorgeous winterscapes that I admired but was too busy with holiday stuff to write about. NHBabs, the photos of your trees covered in snow are breathtaking. They look like antique postcards, the colors almost muted to black & white. I love the lights on the spirals too. I love your snow skirt decorated in maple leaves, PM, although I imagine it has disappeared under a much wider blanket of snow now. Isn't it fun to see the animal tracks in the snow, Pixie? It is almost like the snow becomes a hidden camera for activity that otherwise goes unseen. And Claire, your Christmas lights against the backdrop of ocean are magical. Water adds such a dimension of beauty to any landscape, but especially to a landscape of lights; I guess it is the contrast between warm and cold that does it. And your water is the mightiest of all! It has to be wonderful to have the great Atlantic ocean in your back yard. Now moving on to January, and trying to shovel and snow blow myself out of the January snowscape... Comments (57)Thanks Babs. I sometimes see a few scales even now, and I just pick them off with a Q-tip with a little alcohol. But when it's outdoors, when it's warm, I actually really blast the whole tree with the garden hose. I go all over, under, around etc. with quite a strong spray of water. I hold each leaf and make sure it's clean. Really not that hard to do, and only once is fine. It really helps to remove debris, scales etc. The plant seems to enjoy it!...See MoreShow Us Your Gardens - A Photo Thread - August 2018
Comments (27)Suzabanana, you look to have a lot blooming right now. I envy your ability to grow crape myrtles, and yours is lovely. IME the goldenrod will spread via shallowly buried runners and the seed will float around, so I usually cut the seed head to reduce weeding, but you could cut them and place them on the ground where you want more. Your globe thistle looks like globe thistle, Echinops. My garden is looking tired and unkempt right now, but I have taken a few photos, and I will look to see what is in bloom now while it is still cool. We have had just a few nice sunsets this summer, perhaps because this month it has been raining so much that we sometimes don’t see much afternoon sun....See MoreShow us Your Gardens - A photo thread - December 2020
Comments (2)'Tis the time for evergreens and berries and ornamental grasses. Hollies are a joy as the yard turns brown. Ilex opaca 'Goldie' overhanging a birdbath, next to a blue (meserve) holly: The yellow berries will hang on all winter, finally turning ripe and orangey in the spring when the birds will eat them. Japanese holly (Ilex crenata) has black berries which are not particularly ornamental, to our eyes, but the holly seems happy with them: The Winterberry leaves have finally fallen so the berries are more prominent: Carolina rose berries hang on with a backdrop of Japanese holly: And the Pilgrim Thanksgiving turkey is replaced with a Christmas tree spinner: The weather is still warm but there's a chance of snow this weekend when the temperatures drop during the rain.
