Whether you’re looking to get dirt under your nails, stash your wheelbarrow, grow new seedlings, write a novel or take a nap, there’s a shed for you to dream about here. And yes, a few of these push the definition of a “shed,” but just go with it because all these outbuilding structures are worth ogling.

Garden Storage and Potting Space
Because this home did not have a garage or a walk-out basement, the homeowners needed a place to store landscaping equipment and bikes. Siting the shed to serve these purposes was a challenge, as zoning restrictions dictated it had to be in the front yard. The pros at Gardner Architects considered the topography and a desire not to harm any existing trees, and made the charming shed part of a pleasing wooded front-entry sequence.
Style note: The materials on the shed complement both the main house and the landscape.

The light-filled potting area in this modern barn by Jobe Corral Architects is every gardener’s dream. Outfitted with giant windows, no-nonsense steel tables, ample lighting and a utility sink, it’s part gardener’s shed, part greenhouse.

This charming greenhouse plays a key role in an English-style garden in San Francisco designed by Karen Aitken and Associates. The classic green frame plays off the brick patio and the surrounding landscape. And don’t miss a peek inside; it’s as pretty there as outside.
Style note: The homeowner’s colorful pots inside the greenhouse can be enjoyed from inside and out.

Garden Lounging Spots
And this delightful English garden really is in England — Biddenham, Bedfordshire, to be exact. The designers at Green Tree Garden Design added this inviting hexagonal summer house by Scotts of Thrapston in a corner of the garden to provide a focal point. Outfitting it with benches and cushions makes it a favorite spot to enjoy the garden views.
Style note: Look closely to see the small diamond-shaped windows inside the shed. They are a wonderful detail.

This Hawaiian treehouse by Kauai Eco Builders is a standout due to a wave-inspired roofline that extends all the way down the back wall, and clever design elements like the log that serves as the stairway stringer and the branches that form the railing.
Style note: The curved wall and hanging chair on the inside of the treehouse make this the ultimate spot for relaxing after a morning of surfing.

Slatted construction in this shed design by larson architecture works makes it glow like a lantern at dusk. The form of the building is a modern take on a traditional barn, and it serves this compound in the Hamptons, New York, as an open-air lounge and pool house.
Style note: Don’t miss the interior of this shed. It contains an eclectic mix of a modern fireplace, Grey Gardens-esque wicker furniture and a bright Warhol work-topped coffee table.

When a couple of bookstore owners approached Houzz pros Board & Vellum to redesign their backyard, they knew reading would be a big part of a 170-square-foot multifunctional building that was permitted as a shed. The structure has glass walls and skylights that let in the natural light, is outfitted with bookshelves and contains a built-in daybed bench and a comfy armchair. All of the books stored out here are for pure escape — all of them are fiction.
Functional note: This shed has radiant-heat flooring to keep it toasty on cold, wet Seattle days. This is a good option for heating a shed.

Three sides of this Australian shed by Mirabuild have distinct purposes — here we see how one opens to a tennis court. The adjacent side looks directly out to a pool, while around the corner the facade serves as the structure for an outdoor kitchen off the patio. Houzzers took note of its versatility, jotting down that they’d use a similar building as a separate home office space, a guesthouse, a lounge or an in-law suite.
Style note: This shed’s contemporary style is a stark yet pleasing contrast to the traditional architecture of the main house. Its simple form is what makes it work.

A Multipurpose Writer’s Shed
And it’s nice to follow up readers’ sheds with a writer’s shed. In addition to a writing workspace in this Australian shed by Matt Gibson Architecture + Design, there’s also a workshop. The writer who uses it likes to fight writer’s block by closing down the laptop and tinkering with a drill set stored out here.
Style note: That large picture window opening in the middle of all of that foliage is simply divine.

A Shed’s Distant Cousin
This barn by Frontier Structures doesn’t exactly fall into the shed category, but somehow it wound up in the roundup, and I couldn’t pass up sharing with you its lovely vernacular-inspired architecture, bucolic setting and pleasing relationship to its garden. The stone accents, roofline and fence make this a can’t-miss photo. And what’s inside is a big surprise — it’s a basketball court. This is definitely not a shed, but aren’t you glad you saw it?
Style note: The metal shed roof over the entry is a smaller detail that makes the building special.

Completely agree, although the article gives some great information, the photos don't show us any sheds to pattern.
