It's T'Day and I'm Thankful...

Today was a really good cooking day, and I'm thankful. My itty bitty guest list doubled to just small yesterday. I had a few days warning that they might, but I really didn't think they really were coming. Yesterday, I baked the pumpkin pie and took it, the vegetables, stuffing bread, some heavy bottles, 6 cups of stock, the ice cream, and the turkey breast to where the meal will be. I was whipped! I crashed, then was up late, then got woken by the rain starting (pressure change, not noise). I woke up very allergic to all that the rain brings out, but I guess I slept pretty well in between there, and was able to get to work right away.

Some time into all the bits and pieces I was cooking (roasted sweet potatoes, corn, cranberries and carrots, fried sage (fail) and kabocha (amazing!), cranberry sauce, gravy, spiced pecans, bourbon reduction, apple pie), I realized how much I was getting done and discovered something wonderful! Even though I had the itchy allergies, I could breathe! And my bad ankle didn't hurt, and was only a little swollen. And my bad heel didn't hurt at all, not even at the end of the day!

I got everything done, with a time out to watch a sappy holiday movie, and even baked that extra apple pie (with blueberries). And I'm not overtired or stressed.

This is SO delightful!! I'm so thankful!

And I'm thankful for this forum, for the friends I've made here, and the things I've learned and all the little things. Like I was trying to decide which pan would be best for frying kabocha, when I remembered Annie saying that if she needs to reseason a pan, she makes a few batches of french fries. So I chose the pan that I heated some of the seasoning off of the other day. Perfect!

I don't know that my luck will hold in the morning, but I just have to get there will all of today's bounty, cook some veg and throw the turkey in the oven. Either way, I'm really grateful for having had such a great day on Wednesday.

Hi mxk3, I feel the same way about my house (butter yellow asbestos "siding" with maroon shutters and a concrete stoop for a "front porch"). I'm trying to convince my dh to at least build a small porch or portico, he says that once we landscape the front yard this year, nobody will be looking at the stoop. I'm not convinced :). I agree that white's not my favorite color for a house, at least not in our area. Maybe in a place like New England with a different style house entirely, it would be another story. But if you're sticking with white, I do like the combination of white and navy (say, shutters or trim). I don't know if that would be too stark a contrast for you or not. But it also sounds like painting the brick to match whatever color siding you end up choosing is a very doable option too...in which case, what color would you like your house to be :)? I think different styles of house kind of lend themselves to different colors, so please do post a pic if you can.

I still feel like I'm behind, though. Probably mostly because I SERIOUSLY cut back on my container count this year. I might have 40-50 perennials out there, and another 24 maybe in other stuff. My usual count is somewhere between 200-400+ I want to do a sale, but iffy on whether or not to do it; people are finicky...I did "ok" last year, but ignorant people snubbed their noses at the small (but full) containers of seedlings (3.50 per jug with up to hundreds of seedlings in it). Ok, so what should I do then? Have my sale in July when everyone's nursery plants are starting to fail miserably? Should I charge 10x as much in July as I would have in May/June in the seedling stage and charge them 3.50 for ONE rud or ONE petunia? (rolleyes). I really don't WANT to babysit containers until July...it's bad enough that I might not get all of my OWN planted out by then, but to have to make SURE that containers don't die...well, mid-July I'm off on other ventures...and when they're MINE..."I'll get to it, or I won't" and either way works. My veggie patch is still under construction (I build borderless raised beds); my onions will be here any day now... I feel like having ordered my toms so late that even a week in April is a lot of wasted germination time. I have mosaic projects not started or finished that I've committed myself to (another forum)...I just feel like I'm not getting anything done and time's a wastin' Maybe I'm just usually "early" and have everything out by now and this "lateness" that I'm feeling really isn't at all.

This morning on the way to work, I was overcome with thanksgiving for my life, for living here with DH in s.e. FL, in spite of the 6 month long hurricane season. I was thankful again for our small cottage and the fact that it is paid for. Thankful for being able to get out and garden at this time of year. Everything is doing really well now that the blazing heat has left the area for awhile. I, too, am thankful for many small blessings that happen every day. Little nudges to let me know I am loved and taken care of in this crazy world, the scents of roses, herbs, jasmine, the birds singing, the butterflies flitting around, food on the table, vehicles to carry us around, a roof over our heads, hot and cold running water, electricity. So many things we take for granted, yet if they were taken away we would see just how much they meant to us in our day to day living. Thank you all for your input into our CG family. FlowerLady

When I think it can't get any better, it does. May, I love everything, the bowl, the cookbook and the wine. Just a perfect package. Lars, we have mesquite on our land and DH does the same as your Dad. I have seen some beautiful furniture made from mesquite. There is a place in Austin that makes mesquite dining furniture and I wanted it until I found out what it cost. Well, I still want it! The bowl is beautiful. May, you shop good. Have fun, Stacy.

It's a beautiful cool but sunny day on the west coast of Florida. I am getting ready to don my comfortable "chef shoes" for a marathon cooking session. It's only DH and me this year - but we are still making the complete meals with all the fixins'. I guess it's time to start the pumpkin pie soon - yes I waited til the last minute (my bad!).

I'm thankful for my family and that my son and wife have taken over the Thanksgiving meal after I did it for so many, many years. I'm also very thankful that we didn't get sick from the Salinas CA lettuce that we ate before we knew not to. LOL!

Plllog, isn't it great when things go right and you still feel good? Dang. Savor that.

I'm also grateful for the friends I've made here and the advice they've all freely given, along with their time, their expertise, their opinions.

I'm just generally grateful. I'm grateful my Mother is still here, even if she won't eat anything I cook. I'm grateful that my girls are still here despite health issues and that The Princess will still cook with me, along with the two small sous chefs. I'm ever so grateful that I found Elery, who is kind and patient with me, in spite of my cows. I'm grateful to be here on the farm, living the lifestyle that I love, and being able to sit here and watch the snow while bread bakes and the hum of the dryer tells me Grandma's Thanksgiving table cloth is nearly ready to use for another year.

And I'm grateful that we all have a full table, whether it's filled with paper plates or fine china, and that the people we love are around those tables.

Elery says he'd be really, really, really thankful if the Lions would just win one football game, but that there's crazy talk. Ahem.

We made it to Georgia with the cookies intact and the bread uncrushed and are having a great time reminiscing with family. Good food coming up this afternoon. So grateful for family, friends and the good folk on this forum. Happy Thanksgiving!

So thankful it all went well plllog. It is often a lot to ask of our injured bones to give us some easy comfortable days. My new knee brace is working fine but I'm allergic to the fabric. (my work is athletic and I'm too old for it)...nursing a horrid rash, but better than being crippled.

Elery should be thankful he found you Annie. You are humble beyond, but he did score a perfect soulmate. He won big time.

This morning I was thankful for my dishwasher...three loads before noon, : )

Then I was thankful my mother answered the phone (she never does that) but it is her 90th birthday. I was thankful she knew who I was with exuberance. Next year she may not know me being in early stages of dementia but I will be thankful for all these years we have had.

I'm thankful this year that women are speaking up and being heard, and one of my best friends is in remission. Loss and sadness accepted, celebrate the souls and spirits given.

An emotional day for us. As always, reflective. Who we are and where we will be tomorrow. And the best cooking day always.

(DH stuffed my shopping bags into the downstairs fridge Monday night helping un-pack)... without looking. oy. Frozen foods etc. No biggie but may delete some side dishes.

Will miss Dads long Thanksgiving monologue but will visit xmas.
