There's still a 15" drawer, right? We did it in our last kitchen, but it was Akurum. We simply bought the drawer/glides and drawer front, and added a piece of wood to the interior that one glide attached to. (We actually did pullouts on both sides.)

I used the Akurum too but call Ikea they will help with ideas .

Thanks guys. Everything I've seen so far is for a 14.37 inch opening or larger (or a lot smaller). I believe the opening will be 14.25" and cannot seem to get an answer on whether or not that will work.

Hillside House, how did you attach the piece of wood and how big was it? Was there enough clearance to pull it out without it knocking into the other door?

Wilson 853, I will look closer on my computer as I don't seem to be able to find the 15" on my phone. I was hoping for something that maximizes the space a little more. I saw one someone built where they made a frame that served as the trashcan as well and really used up all the space possible.

It's been a few years, but I'm pretty sure we just ordered the configuration for the split drawer, as pictured below. It comes with a center divider that's normally attached at the top of the cabinet box, but we installed it at the bottom. The rails hook to both sides of that, as well as the outside edges. Then, we just had to switch out the short drawer fronts to taller doors (I think we ended up with 12x15, and did a bit of filler between that and our sink) but they attach in the same spot as the short drawers.

Is that split drawer still an option in Sektion?

Unfortunately it does not appear to be an option anymore. I may be missing it though.

IKEA makes a 17 3/4” deep drawer which can be used under sinks. The reduced depth allows for piping at the back of the cabinet.

However they are only available in wider widths ( 24, 30, 36”), but combining two drawers can get you the proper width:

use the 17 3/4” glides and rails with a 15” drawer back and bottom.

The only drawback is that a 15” wide drawer is only 12” or so inside ( 10 3/8” at bottom). Pretty small for trash container.

Oh, and you use a 2x4 on its narrow side screwed to the cabinet floor on which to mount the glide.

Then you can put a standard hinged door on the other side of the cabinet if you wish, or another pullout.

There is no need for a top drawer front, in fact that reduces useable space.

Here’s pics of what I did creating two pullouts under a 30” farm sink using all IKEA Sektion parts. Because my daughter chose a center drain sink it made for less usable space.

I assume you are creating an IKEA kitchen using the planner? Im not on GW much so I don’t know your plan. It’s definitely doable. As others have said, you’ll do a pullout on one side and hinged door on the other. You will need to use their parts catalog for the exact part numbers. You’ll need to search IKEAs trash and recycling bins to see if you can find something that fits. It is a narrow drawer as ulisdone states.

I also did it with my Akurum kitchen but with a 36” sink base and 18” doors. Much more room to fit two bins in one pullout. The Akurum line had a divider part to attach the glides to but Sektion doesn’t. Use a two by four.

Ulisdone, the sink we are getting is a right side drain, so the whole left side will be available, and the top part will be taken up with the sink which is 8" deep and 28" wide. I think the drawer panel is the best option in our case, otherwise the top will open to just seeing the sink for the first 8". I'm open to suggestions though, if any of you have done it one way or the other. I'm thinking the 15" full depth attached to a 2x4 might be the way to go... or possibly some sort of L bracket.

Bbtrix, is that just two scraps of an Ikea cabinet you attached them to on the 30", so two 3/4" thick pieces? I assume the 2x4 would need to be trimmed down to a 1.5x4 if I used one? How exactly did you attach them to the bottom?

Yes, my DH used scraps in the 30” cab. 1.5” works perfectly. I’ll have to ask him, but he screwed them down and likely used L brackets. He used 4 L brackets in my 36” cab.

Great, thank you. I have not looked for trash cans yet. I wanted to figure out what I was using first. I may end up making something to fit perfectly. We may keep the recycling somewhere else so one larger receptacle would be ideal and it may be hard to find the right size and shape.

@bbtrix will the L brackets need to be recessed at all to have the drawer slide mounted near them?

The bracket in the back clears the slide. The ones up front he cut down the brackets to fit just under the slides. You could recess as necessary if you don’t have tools to cut metal.

@Jacquelyn - I'm planning the exact same under sink setup as you (as you probably know from other threads). Question: did you use any kind of special trash cans to get both trash and recycling to fit? Or are they 'normal' trash cans? Thanks!

ETA: just realized you have a the 36" base, while I have 30", so probably won't work. The hunt continues!

@AMS Let me know if you find any. I have a 30". I may end up trying to make something if I can't find some that use the space well.

@keeneileen I am hoping to have a low pullout on the right for cleaning supplies, but it's not totally necessary. I may end up just doing that. Is the piece of wood you used just a scrap of Ikea cabinet? I'm trying to decide whether to use scraps or a 2x4.

@AMS Right, my base is 36” so I could fit 35qt cans. I just bought replacement cans from another company that makes trash pullouts. I know Rev a Shelf has square cans for a 15” pull out that might work for you. The problem is finding them for less than $25 a pop! You’re probably looking for 27qt.

@Phoebe Right, I just used scrap - might have been from a cover panel. I didn’t have to worry about the thickness though since I didn’t do the low pullout on the right.

Unfortunately I already have my cabinets here, but I'd love to see how you did the automatic opening. I've been trying to plan something like that, but it hasn't been my top priority so I haven't gotten far.

This hack cost us 0 dollars, just a couple of glasses of wine and troubleshooting.

At first we had string on the Ikea trash can lid but it broke too easily so hubby pulled out the cable wire, strung it though the back of the cabinet and out through the front, not really sure why.

A quick trip to the backyard brought a brick, some packing tape and AC foam tape to really secure this sucker down. My trash can doesn't wobble, shake or budge on any level, it's whisper quiet.

My "must haves" was a secure garbage can with a pop up lid, put in a shallow counter (not under the sink) and cost effective (not an expensive custom build, this is all Ikea) plus it lights up!

I use the non-string bags and 2 office clips to hold the bag in place, the lid is taped to the can as well.

We live in 519 sq feet so every inch counts.

Definitely not for everyone but we love it and get countless compliments and grins from all who visit.

Haha genius! I admit I was very curious as to why it was wire and why it looks like it's going into the cabinet. I was trying to think of a reason it would need to be wired hah! Our place is under 700sqft so we are trying to maximize space too. It's very true that every inch counts! Thank you for taking the time to show me!

I need some help. Iam remodeling my kitchen. Iam going to have a 30 inch sink cab and I want a pull out trash can. There will also be a garbage disposal. What kind of sink should I get and what kind of pullouts? My plumber is willing to reroute the plumbing to the right so I would have room for a full pull out and one shorter one. Could you please advise on the depth of sink and pullouts?
