Counter Top Installation Help for IKEA Sektion 15" Base Cabinets
Comments (7)I am not any further on the counter :) But I am still planning on using the ply as an underlay. Unless I don't, lol. The soapstone that I have on hold has a small ding in the surface. I can repair it by using epoxy and ground soapstone "crumbs". Then when dry it sands nicely and you really don't see it. I haven't actually bought the stone I have on hold, but its not going anywhere. They might have other remnants soon. I think I will drive there tomorrow and reassess the "ding" and maybe just go with it instead of waiting for something else to turn up. Just got the under cabinet LED lights installed today. I am still working on the crown at the top. I have one length in and have to cut a piece to finish it up. The space is to tight for me to fasten the crown as instructed. I am using extra strong velcro, that will hold 1lb/sqin. It has been working well for the top crown. I used velcro to attach the filler strips to the 2x4 backing at the ends of the cabinets too. It was great. The instructions for my style of crown have you attach the crown at the bottom of the uppers in a way that is not a good method. They have you directly screw through the bottom of the crown and up into the cabinet box. There is a narrow foam strip that gets applied between the crown and box which looks like it is used to block the gap between, so under cabinet lights don't show through. The foam works, but the screws don't finish flush. The screw heads are so obvious. I am going to back each screw out, one at a time, and counter sink the hole so the screw head will be recessed. Then I can cover the holes with a plug or wood filler. I would post a picture of my under cabinet lights but I haven't been able to post pictures for several days now. I don't know what gives....See MoreIKEA sektion base cabinets: 5/10/15, 10/10/10, or 15/15?
Comments (20)Our kitchen is not fully assembled yet (we're waiting on the countertop install) so we haven't fully fleshed out the drawer uses. We started by looking at work areas then made our best guess as to the most useful drawer combinations - not what was necessarily aesthetically pleasing. We found that 10-inch drawers seem to be the most useful. Out of the nine base cabinets there are nineteen 10-inch drawers (there is a tray cab with a door, and the sink cab with a trash pullout and a door). We did put a combo of 5-5-10-10 drawers in one cabinet. The 5-inch drawers hold utensils. In fact we just purchased the Ikea bamboo trays for those. As others have done, we also have two 15-inch drawers for appliances. In only one instance do we use an inner drawer. That's the spice drawer where the 10-inch holds the commonly used spices and the inner holds the less often used items. Our rule has always been "open and get", not "open, open, get" - way too inefficient for us ;-) As an aside we found that the Ikea Variera spice trays do not fit neatly in a 24" wide cabinet drawer (which was disappointing). We'll probably end up with non-slip drawer mats....See MoreIKEA Sektion sink base cabinet questions.
Comments (0)We are doing a Kohler Whitehaven apron sink. Trying to decide how to do the cabinet for the sink. Looks like i have two options: A. Get their standard 36" base cabinet and build the necessary frame in that and add my doors/fillers/etc. B. Or i can get their 24" deep wall cabinet and set the sink and it's support frame on top of that. Here are my questions: If i got with A, can i simply not install the metal brace on the front/top of the cabinet? If i go with B, can i install a Maximera drawer into a "wall" cabinet? I am leaning towards #2 if the answer is yes. This way i can put a 17 3/4" deep maximera drawer in the 24" cabinet and leave enough room along the back for the piping and such....See MoreCutting/reducing the width of IKEA Sektion drawer bases.
Comments (25)Cherie, Oh, it was my impression from jdesign_gw that I could only do a two medium drawer base. Sorry, I am new to IKEA cabinetry and the hacks. I thought it had to do with the hardware. I figured they just didn't make it for the 5 inch or the 15 inch deep for the 21" wide cabinet. .Although I did see on the parts sheet above everything was 5 inches so it left me confused on how you could do anything greater than a 5" deep drawer. I am not familiar with how these are assembled so I don't know how the sliding hardware can or cannot limit what my end result will be. Ideally I would like a 21" cabinet with a 5'' a 10" and a 15". Can I do this by purchasing 3 sets of the 5" Maximera above and my drawer fronts to spec elsewhere? Is the 21" cabinet predrilled to accommodate this or will the installer need to drill holes to line up with the 5" Maximera?...See Morejhmarie
