Is this an American elm tree in San Antonio TX
I'm familiar with the Texas Cedar Elm Tree and have been mildly curious about a tree growing in a vacant lot near me that has very similar leaves, but now that it's turned its best color yet I'm really curious.
All the orange hued leaves are from one tree except the upright trunk in the upper center of the photo is a Cedar Elm that is growing on the other side of the house.

The Cedar Elm tree in my yard is dropping seeds, but no seeds were seen on this one. It's growing in what was once someones yard so could have been planted by a former home owner.
What is it?

Comments (5)I am not sure of my elevation? Around abilene texas and already bought a mini greenhouse from ogrow. I can't find any information on line or from the company I purchased the product from? Your answer is the closest google match I had and am shocked you answered from this older thread.. Do you have advise on herb growth in this greenhouse? I am assuming complete shade it area (like under an tv awning with 3 open sides and covered top) may be my next attempt. I was shocked to find my first set of sprouts quickly die when temps hit 80 yesterday. I put a thermometer inside and watched temps reach 120 + and it wa starting to rain inside. Comments (1)Yes, they can be grown in Texas.........provided you supply appropriate growing conditions :-) Some shade during the hottest part of the day, recommended soil pH (not too alkaline) and fertility/drainage and sufficient irrigation. Comments (11)Hmm. Perhaps doing nothing is the best thing for now. I keep envisioning the pear trying to grow beneath a 60' elm tree. But the reality is that both of these are small and will probably be able to flourish together for the next 10-15 yrs w/o a problem. Our American Elm are much shorter than back east. Fairly sure on the ID. Our common native elm is the Cedar Elm with leaves under 2". We have American Elm down here but they are scattered. Perhaps that's part of reason DED is not a big deal down here. The only other thing it could be would be a Slippery Elm. The leaves measured 3 1/2-4" and were a perfect match for American Elm. Comments (128)Thanks tech biker. I know less about engines than I know about grass, which isn't too much, but your analogy makes sense. As well as the advice. As far as organic food choice compared to chemical, for me, I think its two reasons why I like it - 1. ease of use ; less chance of human error, over feeding, easier to apply and water in without chemical burn or cement discoloration (which I have a lot of visible mistakes lol) 2. safer for my family, pets, environment. My current goals are to keep it simple like you say. Adequate food, water, sunlight part I'm working on trimming trees. My father just got an extended chainsaw pole trimmer...we are going to share it. I'll be able to reach further up now to shape up all the trees. I"m mowing consistently at 1.0 inch height at approx every 3 or 4 days. I'm maintaining my equipment as best as I can. And I'm trying to be as healthy as I can. This last 2 months have been tough. I just applied texas tee tonight. I gave it a light soak in to keep the dust down. We just had a huge downpour saturday and then we are fried with 105 degree weather sunday and today. I'm still not pleased with a couple of yellowish areas..but I see some green forming. I'm guessing the recovery from my last human errors have just been taking a while to cure. I'll probably do another round of baby shampoo next time I water. Looking forward to posting some quality pictures soon. I do have some great looking areas though, carpet like. The sides of our house are still a no mans land riddled with weeds. They grow fast. I'm trying to keep it low. I really hate even cutting it. I feel like I'm contaminated my mowers just by cutting them, and that I'm spreading their guts everywhere infecting the rest of my yard! I'm guessing its 20/25 percent grass and 80 percent weed. Plus one side has I believe saint augustine growing thanks to the previous owner of the house next to us who planted it or something. I'm guessing winter might be the best time to start a weed attack and prevent regimen....See More

It stands to reason that certain species of elms would develop differently in various growing conditions and climate. I've been to Lost Maples many times, but I was mostly looking at the maple trees growing there as well as the birds and other wild life and wasn't paying attention to the elms.
Incidentally, today I came upon a similar elm tree about two blocks away as the one pictured above. It also has leaning multiple trunks and gold/orange leaves, but has seeds; most of which are still clinging to the tree. The leaves on both are only slightly larger than my Cedar Elm (see below) which is just now starting to turn yellow.

Below is a photo of my 32 yr old Cedar Elm taken today. It happens to have a more spreading form than many of the wild growing trees around San Antonio.

NHBabs, Wow! I wasn't aware there were so many varieties of elms growing in the US.Thank you for the link to the chart.Thanks to everyone for their input. Other than my curiosity I guess it would only be important to know the variety of elm if one were looking to find one like it to plant.
