Wow! I can't imagine letting go of that!

I use a regular maple board that size for baking. I know a lot of people roll out on the counter, but I just can't, though I usually do pies on a silpat on the counter, rather than on the board. But everything else, from bread to borekes, goes on the board. But it's less than an inch thick, and I think it weighs half of what my Boos board does.

I rarely use the Boos because it's so heavy. It was a gift. It sits on my grandmother's kitchen stool because I have nowhere to put it! and, by the look, it's smaller than yours (I'll have to check). It has a channel on one side, so I have used it for carving, but my old beat up hand-me-down carving board is still easier to use, and the Boos thickness makes it too high. I have one that might be about the size of yours that's nylon and perfect for big raw meats, and will go in the DW when tilted. If I remember, I do large production veg prep on the Boos, but I usually forget. :)

It seems a waste, doesn't it? I'll find a good use for it sometime... It's not quite big enough to tap dance on, but it's got to be good for something. It doesn't even need sanding....

Congrats on your find! I hope you find a great task for it where you wonder how you ever lived without it.

I have what looks to be your board's sister...or at least cousin. It's big...really big...32 inches square I think.
I happened to know someone who had an in at The Maytag Company (grin) and it's a dishwasher top. I had a half of one that was more usable but I lent it to my daughter and it never came home.
I have used the big one many times as a cheese board. or charcuterie tray. For an in-formal cocktail party it holds a lot of cheese adn fruits and I have a package of paper grape leaves to decorate it with. I store it, along with a couple of marble slabs, under the beds in the guest room.

I measured. Mine is 17x21". Do you think someone picked up a beef roast and drew a ring around it and drew a rectangle around that and said, "Yeh big?"

That is very nice. I have a pair of larger Ikea-style cutting boards, with one on each side of the stove ... so handy. One side of each has a groove; I have them groove side down, and flip one or both as needed. Yours is much more substantial, and I can just 'feel' it's latent patina by looking at it. Nice, nice, NICE!

That's a perfect project for the grandson ...

Great find! I treated myself to a similar size (mine is an inch thicker) and it lives on my counter as my main prep space. I’m tall so the added height makes for a comfortable prep zone.

I have it covered with a thick nylon board because my husband thinks nothing of putting stuff on it as a landing spot. *sigh*

Have a cutting board cut down to a size so a plastic shopping bag can fit over it tightly.

Each time you have to work on something dirty, put a bag over the board. Throw away the bag afterwards and you don't have to sanitize the board.

My DH made several beautiful cherry inlay maple cutting boards as gifts for his three daughters. The dumb one put hers in the dishwasher - and then complained when it fell apart. How did she think the inlay got in there? The trees grew together?

My Boos is 20x15 (2 inches thick) and has a permanent home on the peninsula. It's used every day.

At one time I was at my daughter's house and the board was on the counter, and i mentioned to my 18 year old grand son that that was mine and I needed to remember to take it back. He said "Oh no!! we use that a bunch!" and I never mentioned it again...sort of like the pink napkins. I just bought some more!

A guy advertising on Kijiji made mine a few years ago for $30. It's 18x24x2" thick.

It resides permanently on the counter but to be honest I baby it. I don't cut anything smelly on it (garlic, onions or meat). Mostly bread and greens :-)

That's why the other 2 are handy, them and the plastic one get used for messy jobs.

Annie, I love your board! Many years ago (early 70's) I bought a solid maple butcher block prep table I just HAD to have. It was crazy since I was very young, still living at home and had zero use for it. LOL, it sat in my bedroom until I moved out. It's been with me all these years until we moved into our current home. I just couldn't find the right spot for it, and it's a little hard to store! I didn't part with it completely....our son has it for now. I know exactly how big it is...24" square and 34" tall and crazy heavy! The top has rounded edges and a juice groove. This online photo is somewhat similar to mine, though it doesn't have the juice grooves on top. I know they can get expensive to buy. I paid $100 for mine when it was new.

Annie, there are many tasks in food prep that do not involve cutting, such as filleting fish, deboning chicken, taking apart a whole pork shoulder, etc.

Easy to relate to that! I would love to have mine with me but have to be realistic. It's pretty special that your dad made one for you. :-)

chloebud, he didn't really make it for me, he made it for himself, LOL, and it was in the middle of his kitchen for years. I made countless batches of bread and doughnuts on that table and so I couldn't just let it go. So, in the pole barn it is, and I'll find a place for it. Both my girls want it and I told them I couldn't cut it in half, so it stays with me!

dcarch, if I'm deboning a chicken or taking apart a pork shoulder, I'm going to have a knife and I'm definitely going to be cutting that bag. You know how they say you don't cut yourself as much with a sharp knife? The nearly constant bandaids on my fingers beg to differ!
