Missoni for Target Collection Debuts to a Shopping Frenzy

From TV ads to pop-up stores to inserts in Vogue, Target has not been quiet about promoting its new line with Missoni, which made its debut yesterday. The hype worked. Not only did Target’s site crash, but stores nationwide have reported sold-out stock, some with empty shelves as early as 9 a.m.
I thought about going before I realized it would be fall’s version of Black Friday: The collection, which consists of apparel, accessories, and home goods, is chock full of Missoni’s signature stripes, zigzags and florals, and many under $40. While I can assure you these items will add a playful personality to your interior, I cannot assure you that they are all still available. Here’s to crossing fingers!

Seeing as the site was down most of the day and many a store shelf empty, I thought I’d let you all in on some of the home products that sent Americans into a shopping frenzy, such as these colorful zigzag Melamine plates.

In Missoni’s world, the dinner plates do not get to have all the fun. The Melamine collection also includes bowls, tumblers and these appetizer plates. At $2.99 each, you won’t feel guilty splurging on that extra fancy brick of brie.

This glass vase and votive look straight out of an Italian glass blowing factory. Talk about a punch of fabulous color ... and each retails for under $30.

Missoni knows how gaga people go over their prints. So they’re offering them framed and ready to hang.
A stuffed animal version of Target's mascot dog, Bullseye, met many eager online shoppers Tuesday, as the retail site went down due to overwhelming popularity. Those unable to get to their nearest Target stores hoped to get in their coveted purchases, but were met with a screen urging customers to "Please stay here and we'll try to get you in as soon as we can! Please know that there is no need to refresh your browser. Your request will automatically retry in 30 seconds."
Shoppers on a mission for Missoni stormed a Redwood City, Calif. Target store after lining up as early as 7:30 a.m. in hopes of snagging one of 400 limited-edition items. Those who came a few hours later were met with empty shelves. Patty Steadman came on her lunch break. "I didn't anticipate it selling out so quickly, and well, I had to put my job above the Missoni line," she said. "I wish I had taken an earlier lunch."
Many tag-teamed and coordinated with friends in different parts of the state. Cherith Spicer, from Palo Alto, Calif. had friends in L.A. on the phone and her boyfriend waiting in front of a computer for the site to refresh. She paired up with another shopper she met as soon as she got there. Together they devised a plan to take on opposite directions of the store, reconvening to compare and refine their finds.
Nearby shoppers shouted in auction style, "Does anyone want an area rug? I'm passing on it." Adrianna Morici, Annette Nguyen, and Emily Strawn also came to the Mountain View, Calif. Target store on their lunch break and walked away clutching Missoni for Target tights, socks, and a pair of heels.

but i'm really surprised at target and missoni. i have never been a fan of the whole h&m launch craze, and i'm disappointed that this collaboration went in that direction. the whole idea was for it to be affordable design, and the execution sorely missed the mark. i agree with you - hopefully they'll learn from their mistakes!
