There is a GoFundMe account that will more than pay for him to have a pair of the glasses so he can go forward with the new technology. It looks like he was happy.

Will he be upset over the years he missed out on colors? Maybe not as the technology may not have even existed a few years ago.

A blessing for sure...especially a child, I think...they will adjust so fast and just

delight in their new World.

My friend’s son has a aural processing issue, where he cannot process multiple sounds. He received hearing aids that helped with the issue when he was little, and on the way home in the car my friend says she teared up when he said “Mommy, did you know you can hear an ambulance and the radio at the same time?”

I always wonder about the flood of information to the brain when someone gets color or hearing all of a sudden. Does one have to learn what the colors are, which names go with which colors? what about shades of color? If you’ve lived with less color all your life, do you ever want to go back to the visual calm? (I visited Times Square once, and will never go back, it was so visually over-stimulating.)

I read an article by a woman who received cochlear implants when she was a child. When they asked her to raise her hand when she heard certain sounds, she didn’t move. It turns out, she didn’t know what hearing would “feel” like! When they left the office, she was walking down the city street with her dejected mother, when a sudden crashing-noise made the girl jump. THAT’s when everyone knew she could hear, and she figured out what “hearing” meant.

@Raven - I too, can't wait until I can cataract surgery. To be able to wake up and immediately see would be amazing.

I remember my son putting on his first pair of glasses, looking out the window at the hills and saying - There are trees on those hills and I can see them. He's getting laser eye surgery next month and he is so excited.

Being able to see colour properly must be just life altering. It would bring a whole other dimension to seeing.

I've seen that, but if you check out the science behind it, it's not as successful and the company has backed off some of their claims. Still if it helps someone, I'm happy for them.

To be "legally blind" is to have visual acuity of 20/200 with correction (either glasses or contact lenses) or to have a field of vision of 20 degrees (without moving the eyes from side to side), a/k/a "tunnel vision."

To have 20/200 vision means that what you can see clearly at a distance of 20 feet, a person with unimpaired (20/20) vision can see from 200 feet.

When I'm not wearing my contacts or glasses, my vision is 20/220 in my right eye and 20/240 in my left eye. I first got glasses when I was 10 years old.

The clip of that boy was so sweet. I imagine he saw everything in black and white. In second grade, my daughter got glasses and when we went to the library afterward she said in a loud voice, I can see!. It made me feel bad because up to the exam, we had no idea. Obviously she could see because she read all the time but I think she meant she could see clearly. After my cataract surgery, it wasn't how clear everything was because I wore glasses...it was how bright everything was and colors were different.

I have count fingers vision.

As one who can't imagine living without color, I can't see anything negative about seeing color for the first time and being able to see color in the future even if the technology isn't perfect.

While the boy, and people like him, may have missed out in the past, they have a whole lot of new experiences to look forward to.

I have seen others, and they seem glad to finally see it.

raven, I feel connected. I'm fairly nearsighted, and I too thought trees were green blobs. My first vision thought with glasses was, Leaves?! Cool.

Raven, I don't think that I knew this about you. What a tremendous challenge in your life! If your 'born with' lenses are the problem, I'm horrified that insurance won't cover the procedure for you now.

I, too, had horrible vision my whole life, including severe astigmatism. However, my ophthalmologist was able to take care of me in the very early stages of cataracts with specialty lens implants that changed my life. I wish the same for you.

I'm glad for the boy and anyone else who benefits from the glasses.

I wish everyone's vision problems were correctable with surgery and or technology. My son has 70% vision in one eye and is near sighted in the other eye. His low vision eye is correctable with contact lenses but not with glasses. He says he doesn't really use that eye. He's too old for me to make him do much of anything. He is unable to tolerate contact lenses. :( Luckily he has good depth perception. There is no surgery for him.

Not vision but hearing:

My niece was born deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other ear with no physical reason. She has completely lost her hearing in the last several months. This has happened before for brief periods of time but she was warned that it could become permanent. The doctors will tell her if she is eligible for a cochlear implant in the next few weeks. In the meantime her DH and son are learning American sign language. She learned some as a child but has never needed it. She tried the cochlear implant to attain full hearing before but something was wrong with it. So sad for her that after 40 years of hearing it is gone... So hope the implant will work for her.

I've seen so many videos on those who have never heard, but received cochlear implants, I've WISHED for that for my mom. Her hearing isn't "bad enough" for them. It seems like it's a great option for your niece. Best wishes!

I got glasses when I was 6 years old. Probably needed them sooner. I thought it was normal not to be able to see the chalkboard from the back of the room. I was tall so I was always in the back. It wasn’t discovered that I couldn’t see until the teacher asked me to read a sentence. I couldn’t see a single letter or word. It seemed like every year after that for many years my eyes got worse and I needed new glasses. Fast forward to today-my vision is 20/800 without contacts or glasses. Oh well, I’m used to it. I am starting to get cataracts so eventually I’ll get correction. I joked to the eye dr that I should go out and stare at the sun to hasten that. I bet it’s mindblowing for someone to suddenly get color vision!
