Comments (2)It's far too early. They never start to initiate sprouts until daylength and night temps decline in late, late summer. Look for sprout initiation to start around Labor Day, and sprouts to begin to size in late Sept, becoming full sized in October and into November. Your plant has a lot of growing to do yet before it makes any sprouts. BUT, if you don't see anything forming by the end of Sept, cut the top off to send it into sprout-formation mode....See Morebrussel sprouts sprouts
Comments (12)These were not just a few aphids! They were covering the plants and down into the leaves of the buds! Yuk! I sprayed before pulling because there were so many and I didn't want to shake them (live) all over the rest of the garden! I think they've already hit my new broccoli. I've never HAD aphids in the 6-7 years I've been vege gardening. What I have now is chard, some snow peas, some late green beans, I'm just pulling up the tomatoes, some broccoli and I have lettuce and beets ready to plant. Do aphids bother any of these, or should I shut down the garden for the winter?...See MoreAre brussel sprouts an iffy holiday side dish?
Comments (33)I love Brussels sprouts, and just made some, sliced and sautéed with leeks in butter. Very yummy. I also like them just plain boiled with butter but I just can't manage to like them roasted, they never get done enough for me. I'm one of those odd people who don't want "crisp tender" vegetables. I want them raw or I want them cooked and nothing in the middle, LOL. Melissaki5, I have the same family members, I think, they won't eat a vegetable unless it's covered with cheese, butter or some kind of cream sauce. I won't touch that green bean casserole thing, but 75% of my family loves the stuff, go figure. I also love beets, any way you can cook them. Marinated, grated raw into salad, just boiled with salt, pepper and butter, Harvard Beets, you name it, I'll eat it if it has beets! Happy Thanksgiving, I'd make the Brussels sprouts! Comments (23)This is another one we like, it calls for parsnips but I also do it with fresh turnips. Roasted Parsnips & Brussels Sprouts 2 large parsnips, peeled and cubed 2 cups Brussels sprouts, cleaned and halved 1 large shallot or ý an onion, thinly sliced 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided, for cooking ý teaspoon kosher salt ü teaspoon ground black pepper 2 tablespoons grainy Dijon or country mustard 1 tablespoon honey or agave 1 tablespoon olive oil or grapeseed oil juice of ý a lemon pinch red pepper flakes Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Peel and cube your parsnips and clean and halve your Brussels sprouts, then set aside. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pan (I prefer cast iron) and add in your sliced shallot or onion. Saute for 5 minutes or so over medium-high heat, until just translucent, then remove from the pan and set aside. Add in another 1 or 2 tablespoons of olive oil and add in your parsnips and sprouts and sprinkle with ý teaspoon of salt and ü teaspoon of pepper. Cook over high heat, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes, until they are both somewhat browned (but definitely not nearly cooked through). Whisk together your mustard, honey, oil, lemon juice, and a pinch of red pepper flakes, add the shallots back to the pan, and toss everything together. Place the whole pan in the oven and roast for 25-30 minutes, until the parsnips and Brussels sprouts are fork tender. Taste and add any additional salt, pepper, or honey, and serve.
