Linkedin is a site for working people to network, and possibly find new jobs. I used to belong when I was working, but I deleted my account 6 years ago when I retired. This is what Wikipedia says about Linkedin (copy/paste):

"LinkedIn is an American business and employment-oriented service that operates via websites and mobile apps. Founded on December 28, 2002, and launched on May 5, 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking, including employers posting jobs and job seekers posting their CVs."

People get job offers via their LinkedIn profiles. My children and my husband have had recruiters and HR dots contact them directly via LinkedIn. My husband was not in the market for new employment. My high school/college aged children were looking for internships and such. One got a fantastic internship he did not solicit.

I would be furious if someone shared my contact info with any commercial site like that. If I wanted to join Linked-in, I would join.

Though I'm now retired, we were all encouraged to have Linked in accounts and so I have one. It's useful to keep up with and stay in contact with former colleagues and contacts. I use it infrequently but it works. Think of it as like Facebook in strictly a business context and with strictly business content.

I get periodic unsolicited requests from strangers to "add them' to my coterie. They come up with my page by doing a search for specific content that will match me and others. If I add them, that reveals the identities of my group and allows these strangers to contact all of them. I think most Linked In users refuse such contacts, it doesn't take a whole lot of thinking to realize that's the right thing to do. I know I don't have any random people who have showed up in my group so no one has revealed me.

The strangers are sincere but they're fishing for even the remotest of responses to try to raise money or usually for hair brained ideas. Yawn.

I do get job offers too, based on the same search for factors in my bio. I ignore all such contacts, it's not too hard. I think there's a setting to refuse messages too. I don't do that because of the contacts I get every now and then from long lost people I've known. I got taken to lunch last month by one such person!

A couple of my kids belong to LinkedIn, I have received messages to join, just delete them. I do belong to FB, and a lot of times people will tell me just search for me on FB and send me a friend request. I politely tell them, that no, it is just for family for me. Well, not truly all family, but a very select few.

I don't want/need more friends. Even if you are the loveliest person on earth! I have too many friends now!
