Are you lucky?
Comments (17)I'm pretty good at poker...better than my DH. But I have a great story about his luck. Back when we were first married and he was still in school and working co-op, he called me about a Red Cross benefit that he saw advertised. Admission was $25 per person. They were giving away a free trip at the top of every hour. I believe there were 3 or 4 trips total. I told him 'No, we can't go...it's just too much money for us right now'. An hour goes by and he calls me again and say, 'honey, we HAVE to go. I had Chinese for lunch and my fortune cookie said that I would soon be crossing great waters'. He sounded so excited, how could I say no. When we got to the event, the head of our local Red Cross was greeting people. My DH went up to him and introduced himself as he went on and on about how he was going to win. He told the guy about his fortune cookie. The man looked at my husband with this 'I'm not sure what to think of you...you nutball!' My DH was and is quite a social butterfly and at times very flamboyant with his stories. So, we hung out with our friends, had some beers and made fun of the winners who went crazy as their names were called and they ran screaming up to the stage. Around 10:30 I thought it was time to go. I had to work the next day and I was getting sleepy. I said, "Mark, we're not going to win...look, there must be over 1000 people here." And he held up his fortune and said, "there's still the trip to Ft. Lauderdale left and I'M GOING TO WIN IT". I rolled my eyes. We decided to find a table and play some euchre to pass the time. As we were playing we heard our last name (a very unusual ethnic name) and it dawned on all of us. We won the last trip! I got up and jumped up and down and probably screamed more than any of the other winners. DH went up to the stage waving his fortune cookie. You should've seen the look on the Red Cross guy's face. Total disbelief. Well, it makes for a good story. We had a grand time in Ft. Lauderdale....then stayed another 4 days in Lauderdale-by-the sea!...See Morerent-free church parking lot
Comments (17)I would think long and hard about this. I definitely would be sure that the church has you (owner of lot) put on their landowner liability policy as an additional insured. There should be hold harmless and/or indemnity language. There also is the possible non-profit status of the church, and limitation on how much $$ they can be sued for. Well, if someone is hurt because of a fall on your property being used by the church, their lawyer is going to do a search of the property and your name will pop up. You do not enjoy the benefit of the non-profit status. Could you possibly afford to carry a general liability insurance policy on the lot. Draw up some type of lease or whatever evidencing the church having permission to use same, and take the premium amount as a tax deduction as charitable contribution? I don't even know if that would work as your insurance is going to be nit picking which claims it will pay for you and which of the church are valid. Are there certain times, etc. that the church will be able to use the lot? This is a really muddy area of law/insurance language. sasafras - that sign would not be worth the material on which it were written. We are living in a a sue-ready society these days. You see them, but they mean nothing. If/when you enter a hospital and sign off on the consent and waiver of liability for say a surgery. Should something go wrong during your surgery and you contend it was negligence, you still have every right to sue. People sometimes assume that if they have signed something agreeing not to sue, then they are not able to do so. No so. OP - protect yourself. Consult an attorney for guidance on the language needed to be added to the church liability insurance policy. If it were my lot and wanted to let the church use it, I would be inclined to just sell the lot to the church for a nominal fee and be removed from any possible liability claims....See MoreMost Outrageous Money Saving Ideas, again
Comments (120)Hi again folks, When I worked as a personal financial advisor, I talked to clients about "financial freedom" adding to one's peace of mind (in addition to providing the worthwhile liquidity that some envy in others but lack it themselves). The person who is deep in debt, owes on credit cards, and worries when the phone rings as to which creditor is calling, this time ... does not know the peace of mind that comes with financial freedom. The homeless person doesn't, either. When a person has come beyond the age of retirement and lacks enough money to pay for all of needed medications, food, housing and the fuel to keep it comfortable in winter ... which is getting more difficult as some of the basics of life have recent substantial increases in price ... that person lacks the luxury of financial freedom, also. But I also said that I wanted people to boss their money, not having their money bossing them. The people who have adequate resources but squeeze the buffalo on a nickel till it bellers ... aren't making best use of their financial freedom, either. To my mind the rich old guy in the restaurant who made a fuss about refusing to pay because one item on the buffet was lacking was, to my mind, just being boorish. Though I lived on pretty thin income for a number of years during my career, now that I'm near age 80 and don't have to worry about paying for some (of the rather few) things that I want, or about leaving my executors so strapped with regard to my estate that they have to go fishing for extra money to pay for my burial ... that level of financial freedom pleases me. Plus I have some to help pay for my extra care before death, if necessary. If I'm at a party where it's to go on for several hours and they're using styrofoam cups ... for juice now, possibly for water later (and I eschew bottled water, at home) and perhaps for coffee, eventually ... ... I've been known to use my own pen, or hunt up one of theirs, to put my name on my cup in order to use it throughout the period. Not so much for frugal/tight reasons, as for reusing things - reducing our wasteful use of scarce resources, plus making less garbage (and that was true long before I lived within a couple of miles of what used to be a local garbage dump [pardon me - "landfill"] but recently had their licence heavily expanded - then were sold to a major city over a hundred miles away). A city that now trucks their garbage something like 250 miles ... and over an international border. It took millions of years to make the petroleum ... and we've been using it, often wastefully, for the past hundred years - did you hear that: "hundred years" - like it's going out of style. It's not going out of style, in fact, the demand is increasing. Unfortunately - it's availability is decreasing. In addition ... have you heard U.S. folks recently whining about the increase in cost of gas (Canadians, too, but we've been paying some more for some time)? In those threads, we had some Europeans telling how they've been paying $5.00 or so for gas for some time. Have you ever heard the saying that, "Necessity is the mother of invention"? Guess who have been studying, working on, building, evaluating and revamping, various means of production of electricity from renewable resources in recent years. It was the Europeans ... not us North Americans, continuing to walk (no, "drive") along our paths of cheap energy availability. Much less, until recently, concerned to find alternative sources of energy. Additionally - cheap food, which has been our policy for years, is finished. Not only was our food cheaper than in many areas, the fact that our incomes were larger meant also that it consumed a much lower percentage of our total incomes. By the way ... some time ago, on a similar thread, I reported another frugal situation, which someone said that she'd never thought of, but was impressed by. I took some hamburger and peas out of the freezer a while ago ... to let them warm up in the expensively heated air put out by the furnace. I'm cooking a pot of rice ... so took the lid off of the rice cooker and put an aluminum pie plate on there, then put the peas on it, then another aluminum plate with the hamburg on that, with another plate or the pot lid set down on top. Two/three birds - one stone. Good wishes for making good use of a lovely spring weekend - it's snowing, here ... again! ole joyful...See MoreCondolence gifts after a death - overwhelming.
Comments (46)The exact same type of death happened recently in our town. Our BFF's daughter who comes over all the time, lost her DH in a wreck on the way to work. He was in his 30's, left behind his wife and young son. They also lost their firstborn at 18mos. So you can imagine the sadness. With this being a small town we all gathered around her and her son, who is BFF's with my grandson. Food, someone spent the night with her all the time, lots of flowers, and several funds. We donated money, but what everyone needs to remember is she and her son need to feel the love, even if they're over flowing in food and flowers. Many take some food and flowers home, but at least she and her son saw how loved they are. I think your neighbor is feeling the love which I'm sure is helping right now. I wouldn't stress about it. It's a good thing....See Morenini804
