Comments (30)I always try to cite the NKBA guidelines, because they are standard for a functional kitchen, and it's better to know all the rules, before we start to bend them. ;) In my own kitchen, on two sides I have narrower aisles than recommended, but it works OK for my layout. My DW opens into a long aisle, not against the island, and the island overlaps the fridge and range by 50% each, so there is step-back space in front of each appliance. Behind the seating I have base cabinets and uppers, providing more space at shoulder height than vertical elements would. My DW is in the prep space between the sink and range, but due to an entry on the other side of the sink, that couldn't be changed. One of the advantages to an island is a second egress--if someone is blocking a path on one side, another person can go around. For instance, if two people are sitting at your island on the long side, anyone entering from the back door can cut through the work aisles, rather than try to squeeze by the second seat. Of course, then you have someone cutting through the work zones, but that might not happen often, if ever....See MoreDesigner help with awkward teen bedroom layout
Comments (14)Do get your teen involved if you haven't already. Provide some options like the daybed vs regular bed option (which I like but may make some teens feel like visitors instead of family). The desk idea may not be as appealing to some teens. Ask your teen if they want a desk or to sit on the daybed with a low table instead. Your teen may not be as into posters as a tv with gaming options. You've probably already involved your teen, but I think it's worth saying. We got a traditional bedroom set for each of our kids and they never used the desks until we moved to a different house with smaller bedrooms. Then we put the desks back to back in the dining room under the center light. Some kids like to be social during homework time. It's hard to know. I certainly didn't. I thought a teen would like to have everything in their room and never come out. Turns out I was wrong and they liked being with each other and with us....See MoreHow do we solve our small kitchen with awkward doorways dilemma?
Comments (5)with this footprint I would try to decide about 1. need for something more than a small round table for seating and 2. tweaks to that buffet you now have in your eating zone.....do you want to set up a better entertainment/coffee bar w a small sink...etc...OR eliminate that and use a BIGGER table ?? Then regarding the kitchen section.......obviously a U shape w fridge on the right wall is a good starting position. You'll get storage in two corners and continuous counter and as mentionned cabs up to ceiling can help. Use of glass doors /good lighting can help w visuals on the walls if you want to wrap them w cabinets. An exercise for you is calculation of the sq footage you need for storage and how a U shape w corners and drawers fulfills that .....and then you'll know how much volume of wall cabinetry you'll have to employ.... NO windows in kitchen section? so you can wrap the walls w cabs VS. leaving some wall open , meaning less bulk on the walls .......You have to kind of figure that out relative to your household and needs...but walls on 3 sides/ provides opportunity. here is treatment of windowless walls ....full employ of wall cabs w details ....achieves good visuals........See Morepartim
