For sleep overs, I would just get a blow up bed, put it in the closet and pull out when needed. A trundle bed will take up too much space when pulled out. A twin over a queen will not give the look you want in this space. They make such great blow up beds now. My sister uses them for all her teenager sleep overs and easily puts them away when not needed.

I would agree about the lack of need for an extra permanent bed. I don't know your house layout, but when my teen boys had sleepovers, they gravitated to the basement where the video games and tv were set-up. The boys slept anywhere and everywhere -- just provided blankets and pillows and they made it work. (And don't forget the pizza and soda, teen boys and girls eat a lot!) Loved those years!

One idea might be to get a tall narrow dresser and put in one of the closets to gain back some real estate. Also, our kids have gotten beds with the higher frame and can store almost all of their off season clothes under there.

I wouldn't worry about accomodating another sleeper. I mean, how often is that going to occur? twice a week? once? once a month? boys don't care. they can throw a sleeping bad on the floor and be happy. (or the blow up bed someone mentioned) In the meantime, you son needs his own space in an otherwise small room.

for my son, we had his regular bed, but then got a futon sofa that made into a bed. Perhaps if you got a twin futon to go against that one wall, it could be made into a bed, but also used for playing games or watching tv. do the closet doors w/ thinner, double doors to give you more room on that one wall

I would have a window seat built into the dormer that stores a pull out twin bed inside for the additional sleeping you are seeking. a finish ceroenter can achieve this using oull oit sofa sleeper hardware. the i would place a queen bed in the space. any type of bunk will be quickly outgrown aesthetically

I like Beth's idea of building in a desk between the two closets. I'd also consider getting closet organizers with drawers in one of the closets so you can ditch the dresser. Then I'd put in a twin bed with a trundle--with the head of the bed in the corner next to the window and the foot of the bed just clearing the closet door. That should give you enough room to put a small nightstand between the bed and the door into the room.

You could also do bifold doors for the closets to minimize clearance needs.

If I put the head of the bed in the corner next to the window and the foot of the bed to clear the closet door, should the feature wall be created behind the head of the bed or on the window wall? I know as a teen I liked making my bed into a "couch" when friends came over. Have you considered a day bed? It's still a twin but you could place it against the window wall and treat it a bit like a sofa - so no real head board. The feature wall would then be the window wall. I also like the idea of bifolds or even just a simple curtain on the closet openings if you have room to store the doors when not in use. What does the teen want in their bedroom? Most teens like posters or room for whatever they collect. I liked one of the dressers you posted for inspiration. The teen might like a long dresser and a tv on top to watch movies.

I think you could make something special with a group hanging of all his wrestling ribbon medals on hooks at various heights over a wall instead of lined up like that.

Do get your teen involved if you haven't already. Provide some options like the daybed vs regular bed option (which I like but may make some teens feel like visitors instead of family). The desk idea may not be as appealing to some teens. Ask your teen if they want a desk or to sit on the daybed with a low table instead. Your teen may not be as into posters as a tv with gaming options. You've probably already involved your teen, but I think it's worth saying. We got a traditional bedroom set for each of our kids and they never used the desks until we moved to a different house with smaller bedrooms. Then we put the desks back to back in the dining room under the center light. Some kids like to be social during homework time. It's hard to know. I certainly didn't. I thought a teen would like to have everything in their room and never come out. Turns out I was wrong and they liked being with each other and with us.
