Canned pumpkin question

In our area, Alberta, the last few years the only canned pumpkin I’ve been able to find comes in a 750 ml can. I only need less that half of that, the rest is left for me to scramble around trying to find something to use it for. i used to be able to buy it in a can half that size. Has anybody else had that problem?

Freezing pumpkin is so popular, as it's a good treatment for diahrrea in pets.

Yup! All the time. One of my favorite loaves calls for pumpkin and I always have some left over from the size can available to me at my market. I freeze it! And use it with the next culinary creation. Freezing doesn't destroy the texture or the taste/flavor and although I tend to use it within a few weeks...it doesn't seem to have a freezer "life". I found a container way in the back of my freezer last week that I had dated months and months ago. Once thawed, it was fine and usable.

Not an issue around here lol. We go through so many cans of pumpkin year round. I make muffins at least twice a week using pumpkin. Any leftover ends up in the dog bowls. Or DH will use it to make a pot of soup with some chicken broth and spices.

I successfully trained both pumpkins and sugar baby up a fence last year. However: The watermelons are tougher. Most of that is being able to tell when to harvest (especially when they're hanging in a sling) and the stems will NOT support the weight if your sling fails. Checking on them also presents issues unless there is 0 tension on the stem. It's possible, you just need to be extra careful. I did the same with cantaloupes with success. The pumpkins (regular old orange) I grew just hung by their stems with no problem/support, but they're much more durable. In fact, the last two survived the tropical storm we had, intact. One last note: watch out for the rogues. You'll have a few that feel growing inside the fence space is a good idea. If you don't keep them away until they're too big to fit, you'll either end up with permanent dents or Siamese twins with the fence permanently in place, lol. Also - pumpkins and watermelons take a LONG time. If you aren't expecting frost, don't worry about replanting. Pumpkins will keep for months if properly stored. Watermelons, well, chances are you'll end up impatient and harvest too early, lol. Cheers, -Rathosaf

The vine is not dead, they are doing very well for all the freezes we have had. weirdtrev, "Is your pumpkin dark green like I described in another of your posts or is it still the same color it has always been while growing?" Once it got to soft ball size it turned dark green and has stayed that way. My question was basically, is this normal before it turns ripe or dies on the vine? They are next to a dark colored border fence for night time warmth. And thank you for the growing tips :-) In this zone any good tip is appreciated. calliope, The stem is still rigid and the leaves are as green as always. ruthieg__tx, thank you. Roasting pumpkin seed question?

Try it. I've never roasted them then froze, but I don't see why not. Make a batch, pop some of it in the freezer for a few days (eat the rest while waiting....smile). Maybe thaw in the oven to re-crisp??

No idea if interchangeable, but pretty sure about differences. Canned pumpkin is just that... pureed pumpkin and probably some kinda preservative. Pumpkin pie filling gives you a jump-start on a pie... spices, sugar, etc.

Louise, I've not had the problem. The cans I buy are usually 15 oz. FWIW, did you know it freezes well? It holds great in the freezer for several months. I've done it many times. Just thaw and stir well.

Like Annette, we feed pumpkin to the dog per vets orders, he needs the fiber and it keeps him regular!

I once had a pumpkin pie cooling on the counter. At the time I was unaware of our cat's fondness for pumpkin. I walked into the kitchen just as she was digging her paw into the pie. :-(
