Celebrity endorsements - have they gone over the edge?
Comments (11)Oh, let's not forget how the names of our most favorite games have changed...the Fiesta Bowl, as example. What's next? Maybe, the Cheetos Bowl? Give me a break. It will NEVER be Invesco Field...always Mile High Stadium. Corporate sponsorship irritates me far more often than it impresses me. I would never purchase a product because of advertisers but I have written many a letter to corporate CEOs telling them of my boycott of their products because of content the corporation chose to put their name behind. Violence is my signature pet peeve. If I happen to catch an advertisement for any product that remotely is connected to youth being aired during violent programming the CEO is sure to receive a a little note from me. Another example is BudTV. When that venue was first announced I heard a Budweiser rep say that there would be "soft porn" available on the site. I was furious! While an alcoholic beverage Budweiser's advertising has always been tasteful & includes some of our family's favorite commercials featuring the clydesdale mascots. Never had I seen the Budweiser name associated with anything I would be ashamed to have my children witness. I was so furious I wrote a scathing letter to Bud alerting them that I was watching that BudTV site & the first time I saw anything inappropriate appear...their products would be banned from our home! There are far too many choices available for beer to have a single penny of my dollar go to supporting porn. Well, I wasn't the only American to complain & the website has never generated the income Bud was anticipating & the content is lousy. Basically, it's been a bust for Budweiser & I'm glad to see it as a loser to the corporation. Now, that Bud is no longer American owned...rarely does a Bud show up in our fridge! It's another of our protests. I once considered purchasing stock in QVC so I went searching for the parent company...turned out to be Liberty Media. In researching Liberty I learned that they aired programming high on my list of inappropriate content. I had to dig deep into the company's financials because Libery also operates some good programming. But, buried in all of the sub-corporations are business decisions that I don't support (including Murdoch who I detest). So, I wrote a letter to Liberty's CEO & explained to them why I'd decided not to purchase their stock. I received a respectful reply expressing surprise that I'd dug deep enough to find that programming! Geesh. /tricia...See MoreWould you choose carding mill or jubilee celebration ?
Comments (8)Thanks everyone !! It can be so hard to choose . I think I'll get jubilee , there is something so unique about it ! I hope it looks nice near munstead wood .. Eeek. Judy everything does well for you ! Haha Moses thanks for your honest review of it , if I recall smelling it once it had a funny smell to me. I am hoping they'll be blooming at the nursery to be sure but if not I'm sure I'll still be fine ! I can get carding mill in a couple weeks if I still want it . I spent my fun money so now I'm only able to slide a few individual roses past the warden ;) saw this and had to share. Anyone who knows me knows it's true !...See MoreHeritage Roses Groups, The Celebration, and More . . .
Comments (36)Here's a question I didn't see answered, last May: catspat(aka "Catspa", NoCal, z9 Sunset 14) Thanks for posting photos, Ann! I don't understand Tom Liggett's claim on his Barbara Worl/Grandmother's Hat sign that the variety "lacks vigor on its own roots" and does better grafted! Mine is on its own roots, in very indifferent conditions, and has never been anything but very vigorous -- I'm constantly whacking it back to keep it to about 6' or so, and it puts out very sturdy runners to boot. Are there wimpy clones of this rose out there, I wonder? Catspa -- Liggett is probably the only person who thinks Grandmother's Hat needs grafting to be vigorous. (Because he sells grafted roses?) He says things like that with such conviction that people believe it. ALL of our 10 or so GramHats are on their own roots. Do they appear to lack vigor?...See MoreAncestry or 23andme users, info please
Comments (43)My grandmother's parents and siblings left Alsace in the 1890s, and my grandmother (the youngest) was born in 1901. Their family name is German, as was my great grandmother's maiden name. My grandmother had brown hair and hazel eyes, but her sister had red hair and blue eyes. I don't remember meeting other uncles or aunts - just cousins. I guess the database is really too small to be extremely accurate, but I do trust the Neanderthal component. It did make me think that Europeans moved around so much over the centuries that it really doesn't make much difference anyway. I know my Saxon ancestors lived in both Hildesheim and Görlitz, and so they may have moved around Germany quite a bit, but they owned a lot of land before they left. The documents I have from them discuss sales of land after they had already immigrated to Galveston. They left Germany on a ship from Hamburg. Some of my American ancestors I can trace back to Charleston, SC around 1700, but that's about it. I don't know how they got to Charleston or whether they immigrated directly to there from Europe (probably England). Europeans that I've met have told me that I look like I am mostly likely from northern Italy, whereas my brother looks Irish or possibly Scottish. There are a lot of redheads in my family, but I am not one of them. I've read that that is a Neanderthal trait. Maifleur, is your family also from Alsace?...See MoreAnne
