36" Blue Star range - gas oven - burning eyes

I've had a 36" BS gas range for 4 1/2 years, and when I turn on my oven it emits something (gas?) that burns my eyes. When I first got it, I was told this was normal, but I make wedding cakes and use my oven a lot, and this hasn't gotten better over time. It is worse if I haven't used the oven for a couple of days. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I have one sitting at the Ferguson's in Charlottesville waiting for my kitchen remodel to be further along. I get worried when I see some of the comments on here. I hope this link helps , it seems to address your problem with a good solution. c

When you first received the range, did you do the oven burn-off procedure to remove all the factory oils, solvents, and residue before using your oven the first time, as noted in the manual?

My wife and I went to a dealer that had both models in stock in a mock up kitchen and were told the following. The BS range has a better flame but the 20k btu burner of the KA is much stronger then the 15K star shaped burner of the BS. The side and front panels of the BS will get much hotter then the KA due to less insulation. The BS oven was not concidered to be a "true" convection oven when compared to the KA, which for me, I didn't really understand. The fact that the burners as well as oven will be much more work to clean was a real turn off for my wife. Keep in mind we have two kids at home that also like to cook but make a real mess while they're at it and don't like to clean up afterwards. The 15K burners on the BS were not strong enough for some homeowners, but that boils down to cooking styles/personal preference. The BS is not able to view cooking temperatures, but that is not a deal breaker, only a set back. I believe my wife is going to go with the KA.

For me I wouldn't be happy with the look if it were my kitchen. My layout so far has a U-shaped run of counter top, with a 48-inch range with double ovens on the top part of the U. I did consider having a 36-inch range with one oven underneath along with a small under counter oven (to be used for occasional baking) in my peninsula. I ruled that option out because it would have taken away from the storage area for my huge collection of pots and pans. Even with that option I was a bit worried about the aesthetics, even if the run with the secondary oven was perpendicular to the main run holding my range. I would have been really concerned had the secondary oven been drawn in right next to my range. Doesn't Bluestar make a 36 inch wide range with a double oven underneath? I know Fratelli makes one. I considered this as well but had to rule it out because DH wanted something that could hold a ginormous turkey, even if it was only once a year if that. Depending on what you cook that could be an option, but I would just make sure your pans/roasting dishes fit inside beforehand.

Anecdotally people say that BS simmers but there is no way to compare in the way you can the top end of heat, BTUs to BTUs because they have never said what the BTU rating is on the low end as other manufacturers have done. They rate in temperature which is pretty meaningless. There are work arounds for that though. The high BTUs,with more flame to the center cannot be worked around other than to use something like a cast iron pan instead of a wok. Only you can decide if it is worth it to give up that function for $2000. You might also buy the package and sell the Miele rangetop and buy the BS. Search Wolf blue chipping on this forum. This has been a long term problem and no fix.

I did, and had service here to try and fix the problem to no avail. But the link Sue shared sounds like what I was experiencing, so I'm going to save it and share it with my service rep. Thanks!

That's a great suggestion. If you do in fact have the same problem, it should be really easy to diagnose for the technician. The bottom of the oven lifts out, and then you can see the oven burner.

Just turn on the oven and see whether it a) ignites easily, and b) burns evenly. If it does, then it must be some other problem. But if it doesn't, then you know what the cause of the smell is, and then it usually is just a pretty straight-forward adjustment.
