Under counter 27' oven beside 36' Blue Star range?

I'm working through some designs for a kitchen remodel (thanks rhome and sweeby) and wanted to bounce an idea off anybody out there. Would it look funny to have a 27" wall oven mounted under the counter beside my 36" Blue Star range? I need a smaller, quicker heating oven for smaller jobs than the range. I don't really want to have to rewire (there's a higher mounted wall oven there now).

Thoughts?

When you say "beside" you mean right next to? or a bit of cabinetry and then the oven? Right next to would look a little funny. It would be better if it were at normal wall height. And even better if it were at a slight remove so that it didn't draw the eye from the range. Have you talked to your electrician? It might not be that hard to move the electricity.

If putting it next to the range is really your best option, I'd vote for function over looks.

For me I wouldn't be happy with the look if it were my kitchen. My layout so far has a U-shaped run of counter top, with a 48-inch range with double ovens on the top part of the U. I did consider having a 36-inch range with one oven underneath along with a small under counter oven (to be used for occasional baking) in my peninsula. I ruled that option out because it would have taken away from the storage area for my huge collection of pots and pans. Even with that option I was a bit worried about the aesthetics, even if the run with the secondary oven was perpendicular to the main run holding my range. I would have been really concerned had the secondary oven been drawn in right next to my range.

Doesn't Bluestar make a 36 inch wide range with a double oven underneath? I know Fratelli makes one. I considered this as well but had to rule it out because DH wanted something that could hold a ginormous turkey, even if it was only once a year if that. Depending on what you cook that could be an option, but I would just make sure your pans/roasting dishes fit inside beforehand.

Most people who have higher countertops are folks with cooktops/rangetops and wall ovens. That way you can make the counters whatever height you want. Most ranges have about an inch of adjustability, but it is a HUGE safety issue to have any part of a range below the adjacent countertop. If taller counters are really a must, then I suggest going the cooktop/wall oven route, placing tall cutting boards in strategic positions on top of regular height cabinetry, or using a range and keeping the countertops next to the range the standard 36" and make counters elsewhere in your run be the taller height that you desire. Many people create their island at a custom height to suit them and leave the perimeter cabinets at regular height so to better deal with standardized appliances. Custom height cabinets can have a negative impact at resale time and severly limit your pool of buyers---not to mention your immediate help in the kitchen being outsized!

Just went through the Blustar "cooktop vs rangetop" research myself, just bought a 30" cook top, but not installed yet. The grates on the cooktop are exactly the same as on the rangetop, so you lo se nothing in cooking space (unlike other brands). Re wok cooking, you can remove the grate and that leaves a perfect bowl that fits the bottom of the wok (there is a video of this out on Youtube somewhere) Re dimensions: the cooktop is a bit deeper than most other cooktops - 22", so plan your countertops accordingly. It is also thicker and will take about a 9" deep cavity to hold, so you will lose a drawer below the cooktop (vs. 4" for other, lesser, cooktops). Good luck!

The glowbar igniters are a really old and proven technology. You'll find it in lots of gas appliances (e.g. water heater, furnace, ovens, ...) as they are so safe. Whenever the thermostat calls for heat, it turns on the igniter. As a first approximation, a glowbar igniter is the same thing as an incandescent light bulb without the protective glass shell. It draws a couple of hundred watts and uses that to produce heat. Right next to the glowbar is a temperature activated gas valve. As long as no heat it produced (i.e. glowbar doesn't call for heat or glowbar is defective), no gas flows. This is very safe. But if the valve detects sufficient amounts of heat, it opens and gas flows over the glowbar and ignites. This is damn simple and there is very little that can fail catastrophically. So, it is inherently a safer design than using click igniters. Those are good for the stove top where a person can supervise the burners. But the oven has to work even when it cycles on/off without human intervention. The downside, of course, is that this glowbar behaves just like an incandescent bulb. Some bulbs live for decades, most live for a couple of years, and a small number dies within months. Same is true for glowbars. Nothing much you can do about it. Fortunately, they are cheap and standardized components. Every appliance manufacturer buys from the same factory. And yes, gas ovens always cycle on/off completely. There generally isn't a great way to modulate heat output. This is a noteworthy difference when compared to electric ovens, which frequently can keep constant temperatures much more easily. For many dishes, that doesn't actually matter. But there are some that do in fact cook much better in an electric oven. And I guess the reverse is true too.

Not sure if I'm too late to the party here or if you are still deciding. When we renovated our house 12 years agoe we went with a 36" bluestar range with gas oven and a GE Monogram 30" electric wall oven with GE Advantium Microwave/speed cook/convection above it. I've been super happy with the decision. I cook all the time on the range top and mostly use the wall oven however love having the big gas oven, which fits 2 turkeys for Thanksgiving and roasts them beautifully. Unfortunately our GE Monogram just went kaput so I'm now shopping for a new 30" electric wall oven. Will most likely go with the GE Monogram again but wish I could find one that has knobs and looks a bit less slick. If you've already picked would love to know what you went with and if you are happy with the choices.

I'll try to get a picture to post. We already have the range so a new one isn't really an option. It's a renovation job and there's already a wall oven in a kinda tower thing beside the range (yes, about a foot away with cabinetry between). It looks ok now but the tower really breaks up the run of counter space which is one of the things we're trying to fix with the renovation.
