Waterford Hock Wine Glasses

We eloped when we married and so I got no crystal or china or silver for wedding gifts. But a couple of years after we were married, DH gives me with two Waterford Kylemore water goblets for Christmas. We then started buying a glass a month until I had 8, then went on to get wine and sherry glasses. Over the years I've added port and liqueur glasses, a couple of brandy snifters, a set of on the rocks glasses. But what I've always coveted were the hock glasses. But while the water and wine were $100 per stem, the hocks were close to $200 per stem, so alas, they weren't coming home with me.

But the prices of Waterford isn't what it used to be. When DH asked what I wanted for our 50th anniversary, I stated the Waterford Hocks. We found EIGHT -- yes, EIGHT on Ebay for $200. They're mine! I got them yesterday! I am one happy girl!

Now to open a bottle of riesling!

Congratulations, for all of the above! Those are such delightful glasses, I would have been thrilled, too!

I don't understand the modern thinking of "it won't go in the dishwasher or the microwave so I won't buy it" - these everyday tools are made to be used, cherished, and discarded once worn out, surely.

We eloped too, Martha. It made sense when we decided to marry. My parents were dead and siblings scattered across the globe. His parents did not even bother to raise him. Like you we had no fancy wedding gifts, but I did eventually inherit my mother's crystal and her silver serving plates and bowls. I cherish them and use them for every holiday meal. My kids love our fancy table which is also set with an antique set of Haviland Limoges china that we bought sight unseen from a Chicago TV PBS auction. (I had loved my grandmother's sets of this lovely china.) I was just thinking this morning that I need to check to see what needs to be polished for Thanksgiving dinner.

I moved to a smaller space recently (although the kitchen is actually bigger) so I did a lot of purging.. I allocated one top shelf for company casual 12 water glasses, 6 wine glasses and 6 martinis. I don't entertain as much anymore and that should be more than enough. I limited myself to a medium size bottom shelf for the regular everyday hodge-podge including plastic mobile versions for summer, etc. It has been more than enough and is probably half of what I used to have. As they break, I shouldn't have to replace for many years -- unless the hodge-podge randomness becomes unattractive and I feel a need to reset with a matched set. I've also noticed that newer dishwashers have smaller capacity, presumably from all the insulation keeping them quieter. So the glasses turn over more and do not get stored in the d/w for awhile -- reducing my need for even as many as I've got.

I see the comments are old from 2013. I'm going to comment anyways. It might help someone. I've had many glasses break in the dish washer. They were thin glasses and it seems like glasses get brittle over time putting them in the dish washer. I have 3 blue thin glasses out of a set of 8 and 2 glasses left out of my other thin set. I bought a set of heavy clear glasses,they have kind of a square pattern on . I think they were from target. Haven't had problems with those so far and have had them for about 20 years! Seriously! I would say what they are called but i don't remember, but im pretty sure you can still get them. If you see them at Target give them a try. And no I'm not getting paid or getting anything for saying this about the glasses.

Just about three months ago, I wanted a few more Wedgwood White plates, but only if they were manufactured in England. The people at Replacements went through their stock to find the right ones with the right mark. That place is pricy, though. Lots of times, eBay sellers will show the label or etching in the listing photos. Other times, you can ask them through the eBay request process for specific information. It takes some perseverance to weed through all of the listings to find the good ones, but they are usually out there. Try limiting your eBay search to "Waterford Lismore Wine Glasses Made in Ireland."

"They are death on your community small businesses." When I need to buy something, it's value for money-quality-convenience-selection that direct where I go. Sometimes one or two get compromised, depending on the situation, but usually not. What leads to the death of any community small businesses is an inability to be excellent and to otherwise compete successfully in the marketplace. Those that do so thrive. Those that don't go away, as they should. There are a couple of family owned small grocery chains in my area that are booming and doing just fine against the bigger guys in the extremely competitive and cutthroat business they're in. They do what they do better than the others - better quality, better selection, better service - and people go there for that reason. (for you Bay Area people, I'm thinking of Lunardi's). Smaller ones that are only "me-toos" go away. We're all better off for it. I only know of one local wine store (it's in Costa Mesa, with the unfortunate name of Hi-Time Wines) that's as dazzling an experience as Total Wine. Not as big but with a phenomenal selection and knowledgable staff to help. That store will always be around, for the reasons mentioned.

Over 40 years ago, I was working and wanted to give my mother a set of Waterford goblets. The department store selling them had staff who were very snobby (they eventually went out of business- I wonder why? :-) ). I asked a saleslady the price of the style I liked, and she replied "Fifteen dollars." "I'd like half a dozen please," I said. "That's _each_," she countered. "Yes, I heard you," I said, getting $90 out of my purse. "I'd like six."

When we married my mother gave us six Waterford champagne flutes in the pattern "Colleen", since it is my name. For my taste it is rather overblown and we rarely use them- they're also really heavy for what you expect of a champagne flute. Since Mom has passed I have her goblets as well.

I like nice things :-) Pity the younger set is less keen :-(

Colleen -- I LOVE it! Yes, DH paid $10 each for the first two goblets. Then when I got paid (which was once a month), I would go to the store and get another. Somewhere before I had bought 8, the price had went up to $12! After the goblets, we bought wine glasses the same way and then sherries. We acquired other pieces over the years -- some through the military when DH had annual training overseas and some at flea markets. My pattern is not as common as Lismore so you don't see a lot of it. But I always coveted the hocks. I thought they were so pretty.

Alas....the Waterford on eBay seems to be a good buy....but for the double old fashion glasses in Alana that I am looking for.
