Perfect cereal bowls, juice glasses, mugs....

I use my Wedgewood dishes everyday for meals and have a set Waterford for formal occasions but want a more casual "breakfast" dishes. Who has the perfect bowl for cereal? Most bowls are too small or if you put berries or banansa on top it won't fit, or the shape isn't right. Any ideas for juice glasses or coffee mugs?

I love just the basic white bowls from Williams-Sonoma, or similar places. I wish when we picked out our everyday china (which was when we got married), I had gone with something basic like all white. I bought some shallow bowls, about 8" in diameter from Pottery Barn that I love for soup and salads. We also have the picardie glasses by Duralex that W-S used to sell. We have them in 4 sizes, and LOVE them. They're pretty durable, and have the sort of plain, european cafe sort of look to them. I also used to love that when on an occasion we broke one, you could buy them separately at W-S, but was disappointed to learn that Duralex in France isn't making them anymore (I think they actually when out of business). W-S is carrying a similar glass now, see the attached link below. If you live near at W-S or PB outlet, check them out. Alot of times they have similar products for less.

Don't have any tips on coffee mugs. We have a set of nice mugs that my MIL gave to my hubby before we got married.

I saw on another site that World Market is selling the Duralex Picardie glasses -- apparently both on their website and in the stores. The site, I think it was Apartment Therapy so you could probably search there, said that World Market doesn't say they're Duralex but the glasses are stamped with the Duralex logo/name.

Just FYI, preserved lemons are usually made from Meyers. A friend of ours has a Ponderosa tree, though, and I've noticed those lemons are milder than the Eureka/Lisbon grocery-store variety. Also, it's usually spelled Avgolemono for the name of the Greek lemon/chicken soup, not Ovgolemono. We have friends who are allergic to rice, so we use orzo pasta instead, which works just as well. Here's one recipe for Chicken with lemon and fennel. One Ponderosa would probably equal three Meyers! Chicken Braised with Meyer Lemon & Fennel A lidded cazuela, cocote or other terra-cotta casserole is ideal for this dish, but any casserole with a lid or Dutch oven will do. The flavors blend together during the slow cooking, as the fennel and chicken absorb the flavor of the lemon. From cookbook author Georgeanne Brennan. 1 large or 2 medium fennel bulbs 3 Meyer lemons 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt or kosher salt 6 chicken thighs, with or without skin 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup green olives (optional) 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons grated Meyer lemon zest Trim the stalks from the fennel, reserving the lacy greens (chop them for last-minute garnish). Slice the fennel bulb lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Slice these lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Set aside. Cut the lemons in half, then cut each half into 3 pieces. Discard the seeds. You should have about 1 1/2 cups of lemon cubes. Put the lemons in a bowl and sprinkle them with the salt. Add the chicken, pepper, oregano and garlic and turn to coat. Set aside for about 30 minutes. Heat half of the olive oil in a casserole or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. When it is hot, add the chicken, and lightly brown, turning several times. This should take about 10 minutes. Remove the chicken and set aside. Add the remaining olive oil and the fennel to the casserole. Cook, stirring, until the fennel is nearly translucent, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in the lemons and optional olives, turning them a few times, then add the wine and water. Scrape up any bits clinging to the pan, then return the chicken to the pan. Cover, reduce the heat to low, and cook until the chicken is tender and the fennel can be cut with a spoon, about 45 minutes. While the chicken is cooking, mince enough of the fennel fronds to make 2 tablespoons. Combine this with the lemon zest and set aside. To serve, transfer the contents of the casserole to a serving bowl or platter and sprinkle with the fennel fronds and lemon zest. Serves 4 Per serving: 265 calories, 23 g protein, 19 g carbohydrate, 12 g fat (2 g saturated), 86 mg cholesterol, 730 mg sodium, 8 g fiber. ++++++++++ There's also this one, from a long-ago GW member. It's very good. This is exactly how he published it: Sol's Lemon Garlic Chicken 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs, such as thyme, rosemary, parsley, basil and/or oregano S & P to taste 1 3½ pound fryer chicken, cut up 25 garlic cloves ¾ cup chicken broth In a small bowl, stir to combine, the lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, ¼ cup of the herbs, and salt and pepper (you can marinate the chicken for 15 minutes ONLY; otherwise the lemon juice will “cook” the chicken). Preheat oven to 425ºF. Arrange the chicken pieces in a roasting pan, and pour the lemon-herb mixture over. Arrange the garlic cloves all around the chicken, stirring them to coat with the mixture. Roast for about 45 minutes, or until the chicken pieces are golden brown. Remove the chicken from the pan. Add the broth to the pan and place on top of the stove over medium-high heat. Stir to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan, while smooshing the roasted garlic to thicken the sauce slightly. I like to transfer the chicken to a platter, pour the sauce over the chicken and then, garnish with the remaining 2 tablespoons herbs and lemon wedges. +++++++++++ Note this Ina Garten recipe requires extra-large eggs: Lemon Cakes Copyright 2001, Barefoot Contessa Parties!, All rights reserved Show: Barefoot Contessa 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar, divided 4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 1/3 cup grated lemon zest lightly packed (6 to 8 large lemons - Use only fresh lemon juice and zest) 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon kosher salt 3/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 3/4 cup buttermilk, at room temperature 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour 2 (8 1/2 by 4 1/4 by 2 1/2-inch) loaf pans. Cream the butter and 2 cups granulated sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, the key to great cakes is beating the butter and sugar until the mixture's until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. With the mixer on medium speed add the eggs, (break the eggs into a dish before adding to the batter to avoid a bad egg or shells in the batter) 1 at a time, and the lemon zest. Cook 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 1/2 cup lemon juice in a small saucepan and cook over low heat until the sugar dissolves. When the cakes are done, cool for 10 minutes, invert them onto a rack set over a tray and spoon the lemon syrup over the cakes. Allow the cakes to cool completely. Note: These cakes were glazed with a lemon glaze but the contributor thought the cakes were sweet enough without adding a confectioner’s sugar/lemon juice glaze.

The older machine, which removes the pulp, is an actual "juicer" and would be the better choice for your recipe. This recipe won't work in the Ninja. The Ninja recipes require an additional liquid such as V-8, tomato juice, iced tea, frozen lemonade or orange concentrate, apple juice, mango nectar, apricot nectar, pineapple juice, even carbonated water or soft fruit like tomatoes in order to make a juice blend. Many of the hard fruits or veggies also need to be cooked to work in the Ninja. This is definitely a juicer recipe. Here are a few Ninja recipes: Veggie Iron Power Punch (serves 1) Use the 40-oz. bowl and blade assembly. 2 c. cold iced tea, sweetened 8 leaves spinach, washed 1 rib celery 1/2 green apple, cut into pieces Pour the tea into the bowl and add the spinach, celery and green apple. Blend on (2) until smooth. Strain the drink through a fine sieve and serve in a tall glass over ice. Tip: Start by adding 8 leaves to this recipe and as you adapt to the flavor, increase the fresh spinach leaves up to 1/2 cup packed. -------------------------------------- Apple & Pineapple Juice Blend (makes about 6 cups of juice blend) Use the 72-oz. pitcher and blade assembly. Cooking the apples first allows the fruit flavor to mellow and sweeten naturally. 4 cooking apples, peeled and cored 1/2 c. fresh pineapple, cut in chunks 1/2 t. ground cinnamon 4 c. apple juice Place the apples and the pineapple in a microwave safe bowl and add 2 T. of water. Cover with plastic wrap and cook on High for 6 minutes, or until very tender. Spoon the mixture into the pitcher and add the cinnamon. Blend the mixture on (2) until smooth. Depending on your preference, pour the mixture through a fine sieve and add to the apple juice, or combine the apple/pineapple mixture with the juice and serve as is. Refrigerate any leftover juice. ---------------------------------------------- Fresh Pear & Mango Nectar (serves 4-6) Use the 72-oz. pitcher and blade assembly. 6 ripe pears, cored and cut into large pieces 4 c. mango nectar Place the pears in a large microwave-safe bowl and add 2 T. of water. Cook on High for 3-4 minutes, or until very tender. Remove and cool slightly. Place half of the pears and nectar into the pitcher and blend on (2) until uniformly smooth. Strain the juice through a fine sieve and pour into a large container or pitcher. Repeat with the remaining nectar and pears. Serve over ice or chill until ready to serve. -Grainlady

Fiestaware bowls: could use some input!

This is a great comparison picture. I have the bowls on the left -- they are officially called Medium Bowls. I like them because they're a good size for an adult serving of soup ... or a casserole. They are very sturdy, and none of mine have even a chip -- and I've dropped them on my linoleum floor (I wonder if they would've survived tile floors). I like that the sides are very straight because it's easy to "chase" that last bit of food and scoop it up on your spoon. I also have the Fruit Bowls, which are useful in an entirely different way. I would like to add a few of those Gusto bowls for chili and similar meals, but since I already have the Medium Bowls, it's hard to justify. However, two negatives about the Medium Bowls: 1) They take up a lot of space in the cabinet. 2) They must be spaced out "two prongs apart" in the dishwasher, meaning I get fewer dishes per load. Changing the subject a little -- now I'm talking about plates: Someone mentioned Kohl's sells Fiestaware. Note that they sell what they call "buffet plates", which are a smaller plate. Yeah, I know, when you say "buffet", I think bigger, but it is what it is. I love them: We use them for small meals like sandwiches. My daughter has full-sized Fiestaware dinner plates, and the size /weight difference is surprising. The point: Kohl's is the ONLY PLACE that sells that buffet size plate, so if you start buying plates there, you're locked in for your plate purchases.

All these pretty mugs.. looks like I am going to do a bit of Black Friday shopping today! I don't drink coffee, but do love hot tea and chai tea. Most of our mugs are Platzgraff Naturewood (probably 20 years old). Then we have half a dozen with our neighborhood name, including a pottery mug from a few years ago. I recently broke our favorite mug from Vegas. Perfect size. :( We have one with DH name all over it in different languages (present from my mom years ago) and a Gunsite mug. Favorites currently are mugs that feature pictures of our grandchildren, ordered from Shutterfly. I'm currently at DD2's house since she has work today. This is my favorite mug at her house. I recently replaced my everyday dishes with white porcelain dishes and could not be happier. The are oven, microwave, dishwaher safe and have a great classic look. My husband even commented on how much better the food looks on them. I was using beautiful italian dinnerware, but he says he could never really see the food! Another benefit to porcelain is htat there is no possibility of lead in the dishes. I have a friend whose son had lead poisoning from dishes bought at a large retailer.

Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma, etc all carry them in different styles. I also noticed this great deal at Costco.com.

I love my rosenthal Loft dishes, basic white, they have assorted bowl sizes, I got 2 sizes and use them both equally.

if you could see them in person and pick, you'd know what would be useful for your needs, I'll measure mine later.....

At the risk of sounding gauche, I must confide my love for Corelle. It's practically indestructible, and Kmart has open stock with nice, deep cereal bowls. They are the best cereal bowls I have ever used. They are deeper than the standard ones that come with the sets, so you have to either find a Corelle outlet or a store that sells open stock. I bought mine in white; simple and easy, and they go with everything. Ha.. who am I kidding. I bought the white Corelle plates too! *LOL* I also have the Memphis pattern, which is very bright and cheerful.

I have porcelain china for special occasions. I have had Pfaltzgraff stuff for everyday which didn't last long enough. It didn't even make it past our 5th wedding anniversary. So, I ended up going with Corelle, and I haven't broken a thing since I got it almost 5 years ago.

I bought a set of white porcelain "cafeware" from Pottery Barn in 1995. They are still perfect to this day - which is kind of aggravating because it'd be fun to get something new! PB doesn't make them anymore - but you can get them at cooking.com:

We have this set from Ten Strawberry Street. It's really pretty, just the right size, and holds up to the abuse of my 6 & 3-year-olds

I vote for Corelle too! So, you are not alone tonilynne.

I like them for several reasons. I have several children and (try as they might!) they have not yet succeeded in breaking any. I can not say the same for the first set of dishes (basic ceramic) that we had.

The other reason is that we have lots of exteneded family so it's handy for me to have 2 dozen dishes on hand for the large family gatherings. Corelle plats are so thin that a stack of 24 dishes takes up very little space.

They are quite affordable and I think they look nice too.

Nearly 25 years ago we bought white porcelain dinnerware by Apilco (a French company) at Williams Sonoma (there a couple of styles; I think ours is the Tradition).

We use these dishes every day and for the last 14 years they were washed by hand (until a month ago with the connection of our new dishwasher!!!). They have lasted through the childhoods of our two -- now teenage -- children and in that entire time we've never broken one and I believe only one piece has chipped (and the chip is impossible to see because the body is white clear through). They're not cheap but really indestructible. I can see a few scratches on some of the more heavily used pieces but beyond that they're as good as new.

I love my fiestaware. I have it in the colors of my home/kitchen. They have taken some abuse and I do find that Corelle appealing, may have to go and get a set!

Juice glasses--check out the Rings glasses at Crate and Barrel--the smallest size, although I think the other sizes are good too. 95 cents apiece!! My kids use these everyday, PLUS they were so cheap I copied a friend of mine and bought eight dozen for a Christmas party one year. We use them for wine and champagne, bistro-style, and I love that we are not using paper that will just get thrown away. It's a little investment but have a few parties and they will pay for themselves :) plus they fit in the dishwasher much more easily than wine glasses, and are easier to store. (They also stack, another plus.)

For bigger glasses I like the "working glasses" from Crate and barrel, and probably other places too:

You can buy lids for them and use them as refrigerator storage. It's nice when something has two functions and isn't plastic :)

I collect blue and white china and DH loves our Japanese noodle bowls for cereal, yogurt and lots of fruit. I have been buying Japanese dishes at Marshall's for about six years and they are extremely durable.

The latest addition to my collection came from Anthropologie. I got some small (rice sized) bowls in varying colors and patterns to use for fruit or ice cream. The larger size is what we like for cereal.

French cafe au lait bowls would work, too.

The perfect cereal bowl, in my opinion, is what I would call a French latte bowl available from Anthopologie. We use them for cereal, ice cream, berries, soup etc. They are fabulous!!!

Take a look at these mugs that you can order direct from a ceramic artist (I always like to support artists if possible). If you like a modern look, these mugs are super cool. We love the feel of them. They fit perfectly in your hand and are so beautiful. They also look really nice when stacked, and the saucer also fits on the top to keep your coffee warm.

Our glasses are Luigi Bormioli; really good quality, stunning to look at, and affordable. I believe our drinking glasses are from the Parma collection.

Posted this elsewhere today, but I am a fan of Niagara Ceramics. They are food service dishes only available through restaurant supply stores. The 18 oz. nappies are awesome cereal bowls. They come in several styles, from traditional to contemporary.

Cereal bowls are from Crate and Barrel....I don't know if they make them anymore, but I love them. PERFECT.

My everyday plates are a mix of all the colors of Fiestaware.
