Information about the pneumonia vaccinations.

Apparently some of the places in this area are not mentioning which type of flu shot is being given and just give the regular one unless the stronger one is demanded.

That's not how it went for us. The pharmacist informed us that it's recommended we receive the higher dose, and we did.

I was going to do that today but stayed up till almost 7 am reading the latest Stephen King book. So, didn't get up till 1:30. I will probably get up early tomorrow and go before work. This is the latest I've ever waited to get my flu shot.

We had ours, three weeks yesterday. Done here too ;0) But I feel like I've been reduced to nagging trying to prompt my brothers grown kids to get theirs. I don't want them around frail 92 yr old Mom at the holidays if they haven't had their shots and they are procrastinating. Neither of his children have to pay for them, ins covered.

I got my high-dose flu shot on October 16th. The nurse at my doctor’s office said they had 10 doses left and more than 10 patients were scheduled to be seen that day who wanted the high-dose flu shot. I’m glad I got mine when I did.

My arm was really, really sore for about three days afterwards, though.

maifleur, I was assuming that anyone who gets their vaccinations from any place other than their doctor's office needs to be a bit informed about what to ask for.

Surely anyone on Medicare is bombarded by information about the inoculations recommended for seniors. My PCP will prompt her patients to get their shots and remind us of which ones to ask for at the pharmacy.

I hate the idea that seniors might not be aware of this better protection against what can be life threatening illnesses.

rhizo people do need to be informed but they also need to ask which is why I posted what I did. I received one of the Medicare information emails back in September stating that this years formulation had not been released when several posters on here were saying they had received this years shot. Either they did not ask or the place where they received their shots only told them they were receiving the flu shot. Even doctors offices will give shots when asked for them. I doubt the other people that Lindsey mentioned that needed the high dose shots were turned away.

Got mine about a week and a half ago. Yay!

I got mine recently at a military Retiree Appreciation Day event. Of the 200 or so attendees, I'd guess less than 25 looked to be under 60. I asked whether the shots being given were High Dose and was told No, they were the regular dose. I elected to come back home to my local pharmacy and get the High Dose there.

Got mine at Giant Foods two weeks ago. High dose was not available so I got low dose. Since I was getting on a 7 hour plane ride a few days later, and the vaccine takes 7 to 10 days ti be fully effective, I thought I'd better get whatever protection was available. So far - so good.

Oh, for heaven's sake! We were given Flublok Quadrivalent 0.5 ML -- NOT Fluzone High Dose, which it appears has four times the strength of the Flublok. Now what?

Chisue....Ask your doctor. Ask if there is any benefit to being vaccinated a second time later.

DH did have two flu shots one year - unintentionally. We'd had our shots and about two months later he went for a physical. Staff at his doctors office was supposed to give him a pneumonia booster before he left since he'd had the pneumonia vaccine before his 60s. Nurse gave him both pneumonia and flu vaccine -I was furious when told. But his fault too, you'd think he would have asked why she was coming at him with two syringes. No effects from the double flu shot. No flu either.

Chisue, it won't hurt you to get the high dose vaccine even after getting the other one. Just wait a period of time (2 weeks, perhaps) to let your body fully respond to the first shot.

Chisue is a special case. She needs to consult her Dr before doubling up.

Your 'special case' thanks you! (I think. lol) I'm sending my oncologist an email. I've been hospitalized for pneumonia twice.

If anyone needs to stop smoking, take him on a tour of the respiratory ward -- all those desperate, grey people gasping their last. I was the only 'discharge' from that floor in a week. Others left for the ICU, never to return.
