~Our Passports Have Arrived!!!
Comments (21)Hi Lori, most cruise ships have computer rooms with perhaps a dozen computers where they might schedule classes plus they will have another area that has maybe 5 or 6 computers if people wish to purchase internet minutes to check email. If you take a media stick, they will let you transfer your pics on their equipment usually free of charge. They do have cd's available for purchase & you can put your pics on those too but they charge something like $5 each. You could carry a few blank cd's & transfer your pics too. The passport pouch is a good idea but on the cruiseline we travelled with, they suggested we just carry photocopies of the identification pages on the passport when we went ashore in the various ports. The passports themselves and other important valuables were locked in the room safe. We had no problems. I think that you'll find that you would be required to remove your passport from the pouch yourself and hand it to the Customs/Immigration Agent by itself. When I was a newbie traveller, I purchased a pouch that goes around your waist inside your clothes. It held money, passport, traveller's cheques, etc. I used it the first year we went away & dropped it like a hot potato. Now I have the wallet that I use. It is easier for me but I usually travel alone (hubby stays home, I go with my sister). If you have kids that are going with you & you carry all their ID, you'll have to hunt around for a suitable method of carrying them. I'm sure you will enjoy Princess Cruise Line. My brother & his wife have 28 or 29 cruises under their belt with Princess so the perks are VERY good for them right now. My sister & I usually travel on Celebrity...not much for perks but we love the luxury. Have fun on your vacation!!...See MoreAlaskan cruise, travel agent or not?
Comments (29)Boop, you & your DH should do it. We aren't big cruise fans but this was fun. Neetsiepie, we did very little onboard. I did take a 'martini-making course' one afternoon while we were sailing. It was about an hour and quite fun actually. There were only about 4 of us at the bar and the bartender knew what she was doing. Some we know did go to the onboard live entertainment, dance classes or other activities in the evening. We were usually too tired! The casino holds no interest for us, and onboard our ship it was very small and we never went in. I can't imagine taking a cruise and just spending all your time in a casino! We took every opportunity for the land excursions offered when we docked. If you timed it right you could do one in the morning and one in afternoon and come back to the ship for lunch. All the pickup points for the land excursions were at the dock with our ship's excursions. Easy-peasy. We took a guided hike in a rain forest, a train ride into the mountains, went sea kayaking, took a jet boat to a glacier, sea plane to the Misty Fjords, a tour to another glacier where we hiked out to a closer view, a whale watching boat ride (saw orcas and humpbacks). Seems like I'm leaving out something but can't remember. A couple of times it was very windy on deck but we did enjoy walking around the deck or sitting on our balcony and watching the view from there of the scenery as we passed by. We also enjoyed the onboard gym and worked out several times. Or we would go up to one of the bars (one at the bow and one at the stern) and watch from inside....See MoreTap water on ships
Comments (12)Having completed 39 cruises in my life, I can attest to the water thing. I have no problem with the taste; however, the missus insists on having bottled water for taking her morning pills. I do not know what the current rules are for all the cruise lines, but Holland America allows you to bring your own water on board. (What they sell on the ship is outrageously expensive.) Consider this: since you will be going to Alaska, you will be able to get off the ship in most ports (you will be in Canada for at least one stop), and you can replace your bottled water almost daily. Take one bottle with you. Try the stuff that comes from the tap and decide yourself. The missus insists on the bottled stuff for her pills, but she has no problem with drinking the water that is served in the dining rooms. I cannot figure that one, and I won't try either....See MoreAlaska cruise
Comments (25)Fortunately, bad weather on our cruise didn't ruin our trip. It was part of a 6-wk drive through the PNW and we had a blast before and after the cruise. Ironically, after we had done a whale-watch excursion on the cruise (where we saw almost nothing except a couple of spouts and a few glimpses of an orca pod), the next week afterwards we ended up taking a couple of friends on a whale-watching excursion leaving from Victoria BC . The Victoria boating trip was terrific - just the luck of the draw, lol! Our friends were absolutely thrilled, with humpbacks all around us for several hours, spyhopping and gliding around the boat for lots of up-close shots. It was their first visit to the Seattle area and they loved it all. We go up regularly so the cruise disappointment was minor, really, in the overall scheme of things. Oh, just had a thought about cruising from Seattle - some hotels run cruise specials for people driving in. Stay one or two nights, and you can leave your car at the hotel for the full week you're on the cruise. Plus, the hotel provides a shuttle to/from the pier. It's a GREAT deal if you're driving....See Moremaifleur01
