Mammogram question
Comments (21)I am 11 years out now....seems like yesterday doesn't it? I had no risk factors...but I was 62. The older you the more chance for cancers of all sorts, especially breast cancer. I currently have a young (46) friend who had a double mastectomy last august....she had no risk factors, no family no HRT, excercized to the max, breast fed 3 kids...didn't drink to excess etc etc. She discovered a lump less than a year after her last mammogram and it was a very aggressive sort of cancer....and anyhow she had the surgery, reconstruction, chemo and is now half way through a year if herceptin therapy...infusion every 3 weeks. If that "spot" were mine...I would say please take it out....see what it is and be done with it.... And for sure I would be beating down the door of the radiology lab for my mammogram....and be checking that lump every day to see if it was changing. LOL!! I have another friend....who had a lump they were watching....and they watched and it turned into cancer...or they found out it's cancer, and 8 years ago she had the mastectomy and reconstruction. She says now, I should just have said....don't watch the thing....cut it out!! I know it's awful to come to grips with the thoughts that you may have something nasty in your breast....but....you may. keep your eye on it!! If it grows know about it!!! Comments (29)If I'm not mistaken, many women are now being diagnosed with cancer in old age. If every discovered non-benign cell is called Cancer, and all are treated, we can't answer a lot of questions: Are these all life-threatening cancers? Are all fast-growing? Would the person's immune system eliminate some of them? Would the person die of natural causes before the cancer caused serious damage? How much damage is done by the false positives and treatments for the 'positives'? What happened to all the women who did NOT have a cancer discovered (or treated) 'before mammography'? It's an unscientific leap to assume they all died before their time of undiscovered atypical cells in their breasts. I understand the desire to 'get it' before it becomes life limiting, but we don't know which we are seeing or what the outcome would be if it were unseen. Just because we can LOOK! LOOK! shouldn't mean we always need to CUT! CUT! I'm reminded of the adage of not consulting a surgeon if you don't want surgery. It's what they DO! Re: Pap testing. What is the rationale for this test for a woman who is not sexually active or who has only one longtime (trustworthy) partner?...See More70's transitional cottage exterior before & after

Comments (18)I'm sorry mindshift, but I disagree. I don't think the decision can be based on just family history. I'm seeing my dentist tomorrow, after being rescheduled twice. This is for a cleaning/exam. I am to wait in my car, they will come out to me, ask a few questions, take my temp. It doesn't worry me at all. I will be scheduling my mammogram and a colonoscopy for my husband. He should have gone this month. He had polyps last time and goes every 3 years now. Both the Breast Center and the GI Center are free-standing (separate entrances/parking) centers at the hospital. Ground level, no elevators, etc. I am expecting that they may have me do a drop-off and pick-up for my husband rather than waiting in the waiting room. We'll see....See Moremaifleur01
