You should try living up here in the far north (lat. 47.6 N) ! We have less than 8 hours of daylight at the winter solstice. With that little daylight, it really doesn't matter if it starts an hour earlier or later :-) I just find the switching off and on with DST an annoyance.

The offset is that summer days here are in the reverse with a good 16 hours of daylight. We can't start 4th of July fireworks displays until 11pm as it is too light earlier.

Actually we'll be moving back to Standard Time which I greatly prefer. Can't stand daylight savings (otherwise know as energy wasting time). I can't see any purpose to getting up in the dark and going to bed when it's still light.

Another one here that prefers standard time.

I wish I could turn my clock back to when my Dad was still alive, and spend a day talking to him.

I take the cats to the cellar for supper and bed when it gets dark. In summer that can be 8:30 or 9pm. But when Fall begins and winter approaches, they have to go to the cellar earlier and earlier, because I just don't want them outside after dark. Thomas is not a happy camper when he has to be shut up at 6:30p. and not left out until 7:30am. Soon it will be 4:30p. when the sun goes down.

That picture of the car radio is funny. However, that is what I do. I will now be on the correct time for the winter.

Washington State voted to make daylight savings time permanent and the Gov signed it into law. The catch is, a state can't opt out of standard time by federal law unless Congress approves it. Congress has not. We'll be changing our clocks along with everyone else next week.

I wish we could stay permanently on daylight savings time out of preference for having the daylight in the evening rather than in the morning. Early darkness makes already shortened days seem even shorter. When living in Europe, I was even farther north than the 47 degrees North gardengal cited for her home and I found the winter darkness together with gray winter weather (like gardengal also has) depressing. Invariably, when taking a plane flight during the winter, the passengers would break into applause and or cheer after takeoff when the plane climbed through the cloud layer into sunshine.

Gray and dark? No thanks.

I don't care which way it goes, choose one and stick with it. The time of day is totally man dictated anyway. We don't need all this fuss and bother.

while my car and kitchen range are easy to change the weather/temp/time thing hanging on the wall next to my chair is not. I will have to tear out my hair again. DH's clock that projects on the ceiling is likely to be wrong for days but maybe the temp will reassert itself (There are temp doohickeys outside for these things). They are all supposed to be automatic for time. I hate the change but most especially the spring.

Having lived here all my life, I do not find the winter depressing...........boring maybe, but not depressing :-) But I do know that SAD affects a large number of folks. I just do not share that malady.

Besides, when it is dark two thirds of the day, gray hardly matters that much! And when the sun does choose to shine here in winter, it can be pretty spectacular.

I would like permanent daylight savings time, but a simple solution to the hour change would be to just change it by half an hour permanently and never have to keep switching back and forth.

Yea!!! It was daylight before time to leave for church this morning, so nice to be back on standard time.

Gardengal spoke of " ... living in the far north ... ", which is rather relative, depending on your viewpoint (more or less the topic of the sermon this morning, delivered by our minister just returned from leave due to replaced hip).

"Far north" to Canadians gives one about 3 mos. of unrelieved dark in winter ... and 3 mos. of continuous sunshine in summer.

Imagine how tough life must have been for the Inuit, back in the early days, with no iron to make a knife, a stovepipe, a needle, etc.

During World War II, after our farmhand had gone to war, when Dad could find a day labourer for some extra work, he didn't like daylight savings time, for it meant that they'd show up just after dark had departed ... and leave, as Dad used to say, " ... about the middle of the afternoon!".

During those 6 years, for ordinary work, what Dad, this pre-teen, then teen-ager and a couple of younger sons got done ... got done, on our rather large farm: the rest didn't. One learns rather early in life about prioritizing (if that should happen to be a real word).

Our British Columbia is wanting to stay daylight savings year-round, as is being discussed all along the west coast, it appears.

As Grandma, who lived with us as a widow, and Dad used to say, "What problems we can dig up when we can't find much else to do!".

I don't like daylight savings. The TX House almost repealed it but house members who attend church and want to watch football after, voted against it. Because football games would start at 11 a.m. which would conflict with their church schedule. Never mind that most Texans want it repealed.
