Curtain Dilemma in kitchen nook

Hey guys,

Please ignore the mess i will be adding the photos down below! I am dying to add some personality to my breakfast nook area!! The issue here is that the window trim and the kitchen cabinets are too close for comfort here! What should I do? If i opt out of adding the to the left window, would it look silly if i only did the right window? Next to the right window is a small wall space and my back door, directly next to that is my fireplace and a smaller window with no other wall space next to it either. ugh!!! Any advice would be appreciated!

I am no sure where the nook is in realtion to the other stuff you describe.Post some pics of the actual space , what you want to put in there for furniture The first thing I would do is remove the blinds and add some roman shades is a print fabric

Gosh, I don't know. For some reason, no Houzz link shows up. Do a search for "raw wood" dining table. It's possible the chairs are separate. Check out World Market, CB2, Wayfair. The back bench looks to be a church pew if you look closely., a clever idea. Take good measurements for the banquette and table since you have a very narrow space.

😂years of experience Robert. I really like men, have mostly worked with men. Appreciate the trades and defer to their expertise when I do work with them! I also recognize when someone is out of their element, has bought a large home and needs the help of a DESIGNER! People with far more experience and more years and many more homes in their lives know the value of hiring a designer. I understand that you don’t want nor see that value. This is a young couple with very little experience and not a lot of vision. Trying to design a home on a forum by consensus of many opinions while it may be fun is going to get this couple ( who obviously has communication problems) nowhere! I don’t have a problem with you personally as I don’t even know you and I’m sure your home is lovely but your experience is quite different than Swilkinson’s. I’m sure you don’t mean to insinuate that staying home and raising children; taking care of a family and large home is not also hard work! I know you could not be that insensitive.

PS it would probably also be better to invest in the type of curtain rod that fits a bat window nook like yours even though the windows are uneven in height

What a lovely, cheerful kitchen you have! Shhhh, please don't tell anyone , but ALL of my curtain rods are attached to the window trim! Many folks on here would be aghast at such a horror. So that is an option. Otherwise you could attach the brackets to the wall a few inches up from the window trim. For the window close to the cabinet you will not be able to extend past the window obviously. For the other pair of windows that will be an option.

No one will notice because they will be in awe of your beautiful home.

@grapefruit1_ar Ahh thank you!! Do you have any examples? :) Thanks for responding!! Im just worried about splatters as well and not being able to pull the back.. Just let them hang?? I dont have a single curtain in my house... its awful!

@Patricia Colwell Consulting I have a table in there now. I will try and find another picture! I agree with removing the blinds but not sure what to find the shades!

We do not have panels in this home, and we do not have privacy issues. We have a second home that has panels at almost every window. I use " hidden" shades that can come down at night when needed.

Second all Grapefruit says. It'll look really nice. Unless you really want something bright, I'd suggest going in the light range to blend as a way of not drawing attention to less than architecturally ideal window, cabinet, wall spacing. Big deal anyway, of course, but unlikely to be noticed at all without help.

I love curtains for their pretty, softening effect of all those rigid surfaces, functional versatility, the way they flutter in a breeze, and that you can choose among hundreds of fabrics. Perversely, considering how very inexpensive simple panels are to run up (or tape), I hardly ever see them these days except in some higher-end, professionally decorated homes in glossy magazines or commercials.

And my own. :) I have curtains on the windows flanking the hood over my stove. I mounted them inside the frames (which are 4" deep) to keep them safely away from the stove, but they're much closer than yours, and there's never been a problem with spatters. But of course curtains are as washable as dish towels. Sun would fade bright colors before washing did.

No curtains in the kitchen area, but I think your whole space would look great with Roman blinds instead! Lots of options for personality...
