Hardware dilemma for breakfast nook

Lisa WJ

We're nearly done with a full renovation of our small kitchen in a 1920s-ish house, and the refinished cabinet doors just got put back on the built-ins in our breakfast nook. (Whether to keep the breakfast nook at all was a big question initially, but we're now very glad we did.)

The hinges on the cabinets are maybe original, or at least very old, and I really like the way they look after decades of paint was stripped off. But the problem is that the cabinets need pulls or latches of some type (there is otherwise no way to open them), and I have no idea what could go well with the vintage hinges.

Here's what a few of them look like in slightly different lighting, plus a view of the nook:

I like the idea of cabinet latches like this one below, especially to keep out the toddlers and cats. But I'm not sure if the "antiqued" versions would really match well. Maybe worth trying?

I've also thought glass might work? We have one very old doorknob that's glass and brass.

The cabinets previously had two-inch red plastic handles, so brittle that several were broken, and the rest pretty much disintegrated when they were removed. They were pretty much nonfunctional.
