I think what Amex does is double the manufacturer's warranty. So if that warranty covers in-home service, so does your Amex extension... otherwise not. Same goes for which parts the manufacturer's warranty covers. Amex will extend coverage on those parts, but won't help at all on anything not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. So basically, you should do two things: (1) Call Amex to verify exactly how the warranty extension works; and (2) Call the manufacturers (or sellers) of every appliance to find out exactly what's covered (the entire appliance, or just certain parts? And what about labor? And does it cover in-home service? etc.). THEN you will be able to make a sensible decision. Oh, if you want, it might also be worth a few minutes on google to get an idea of how much replacement parts cost. I've heard that, for example, Aga range parts are much more expensive than replacement parts for other mid/high-end ranges. (Don't quote me on that, but I've heard it, and it's just an example of the fact that different brands may be more of a pain for you to fix without a warranty.)

My folks kept 3 freezers outside. One in the carport, two others in a detached garage. The Norge lasted about 30-35 years. After 20+ years, they sold the 2nd and third, then bought a smaller unit. Still in the carport. They all plugged in to standard outlets that were present in the garage and carport at the time.

Hi Lone Jack........LOL.....Mine is just a pup. YAY! :) Here's hoping it's a healthy pup. :) My bigger Wood one (not made out of wood, haha). is about 5 and 1/2 tall and 2 and 3/4 wide (can't find the cf info anywhere). I didn't mention that I did buy a small 5.8 cf freezer to squeeze into our utility room. It's full now too! It's only about 2-3 years old. I think it will slowly get better, since I'm learning not to always feel like I need more than I really do need. (But you know how that goes. Once I quit doing that, something bad will happen and I'll run out. haha.......see, I AM neurotic. ;) ) I had thought of buying just a back-up freezer, but I was looking at a big one, but you reminded me I could get a smaller one for an emergency, and that would help a lot if this one died.....at least if it took awhile to get a new bigger one delivered. Not sure where I'd store it though......no garage. We do have a tiny basement and just last week DH and DS hauled up a HUGE old fridge from the basement and we swore we'd never keep one down there again, but a small freezer would be do-able. Or we could keep it in the living room, dining room, bathroom, etc., haha Anything to save frozen garden stuff! Sorry for the ramble. But the smaller back-up-plan-freezer is definitely a possibility. Thanks for reminding me of the smaller ones!

Like Jack, my only auto-defrost freezer is the one on my refrigerator and things do seem to get freezer burned more quickly, and it doesn't seem to freeze as "hard" as the others. In addition to the bottom freezer on my fridge, I have three chest freezers and an upright, and defrost them all yearly when beef is being processed, then go help my daughter defrost her upright. Yes, I use them all, LOL. Two are in the pole barn, one is strictly for beef and the other a mix of venison and chickens, we raise meat birds every year and my husband hunts. The upright in the garage holds pork, we buy a hog locally every year and the final chest freezer in the garage is for garden produce like corn, shredded zucchini for zucchini bread, bags of rhubarb and broccoli. It's also where the raspberries and strawberries we grow go, and the asparagus from our patch. Any butternut squash left in storage in the spring will be roasted, pureed and packed into bags and stored there too, along with peach slices for cobbler and things like freezer jam, homemade bread, unbaked cookie dough, etc. Because they are not in the house, it's easier to defrost, if it melts a puddle onto the floor it's easily cleaned. My daughter's freezer in in their breezeway, so easily cleaned there too. It's a bigger problem keeping the freezer contents organized than it is defrosting them, LOL. Annie
