New Ranch! BUT ugly front porch awning.....exterior paint and col
Comments (34)Congrats on your new home! It will be charming. I think the awning spoils the lines of the house, and doesn't let you see the interesting angles of the brickwork. I would take it down. However, if you think it is really of benefit and you want to keep it, I would paint it the same color as the siding OR the same color as the roof. I would also paint the brown wood the siding color - it makes the front windows feel like they are sitting in a hole, and doesn't really do anything special for the house. I would also love to see you take out those bushes in front of the porch. They really date the house, and exposing that brick and stone would give the front porch more substance. A wider, curved bed in front of that with low plantings would be nice, and then perhaps a larger evergreen on the left corner of the porch. A second curved out bed in front of the left half of the house, perhaps a birdbath in the middle of the bed, and then a small tree of some kind on the left outside corner of the house, but a bit away and in the final curved planting area out even a bit more into the yard there. The ironwork is also a dated look, but I don't know if you want to replace that right now. Personally, I might take out the pieces in between the vertical posts, and open up the front porch even more. I think I would leave it white, like the rest of the trim on the house. Finally, I would think about a strong accent color for the front door. A rich navy would be very pretty, and a good transition between the cool grey tones in the roof and the warmer yellows and oranges of the brick and siding....See MoreNeed help with this ugly concrete porch
Comments (19)I have finally finished. It took a little longer that I thought. Mainly due to weather. After parging the sides, we replaced the bottom step with a precast step from a local brickyard. It was about $50. Plus some solid blocks to set it on. Then I parged the sides of the new step to help blend it in. Then I painted the whole thing one color. Gave the railing a nice copy of shiny black rustoleum, put up a new mailbox, and some nicer looking house numbers. We also took down the railing next to the sidewalk as it wasn't necessary. I need to touch up the paint a little after adding some flexible caulk around the new step, and spilling a little rustoleum. And get a step stool and take down the little numbers over the door. Then some flowers. I n...See MoreMy Cape style home and a life changing discovery.
Comments (21)Laughable, you are so right. Little by little my own aging parents are starting to clear out the attic with help. Lots of difficult decisions to throw or donate meaningful things that are no longer used. Growing up, my mother saved everything and was never embarrassed (like I was) by the amount of clutter on her counters. As a result, I am the opposite and the minute a kid grows out of something or we haven't used something for some time, out it goes. I'm sure there will be some regrets down the road when I don't have that thing to remember a milestone by, but but I feel that it's either now or 30 years from now that I make the decision to let it go so it may as well be now and save the space. I'm going to at least get an estimate to drywall and add carpentry and access doors to do something similar to what your father had. The character it adds is so charming, IMO. Awesome pic you shared....See More*Please Help! Renovating for Curb Appeal on an Ugly House with Porch*
Comments (11)I agree the door needs changing out, thoughts on what would look best? I know landscaping is a must, but it's winter here so no moving of plants until spring as I want to replant them elsewhere. My focus is on the exterior of the house - the porch is my major concern and what type of windows to buy, do you feel it's too busy with 6/6 grids? I wanted Andersen 100 series casements, but as they will open onto the porch walkway I think that's not really an option so am going for Andersen 100 single hung or Marvin Wood Ultrex/Andersen Woodright 400 series in double hung. The foundation will probably get wrapped in a bluish grey stone. Right now figuring out railings on the porch, color, look, etc....See Morelily316
