Comments (13)Bronze Star: one of the more disease resistant roses I grow (and I don't spray) and it has large blooms with a very strong fragrance. (I even grew it for 7 years on the north side of the garden in definitely part shade conditions.) Blooms last well as cut flowers (the large blooms in cooler fall weather in those golden apricot tones are especially fabulous) and a few in a vase perfume the whole room. Growing in full sun, I've seen the flowers fade out to ivory, but here in part sun they hold their color very well. Centennial Star: balled badly here. A very nice somewhat unusual fragrance (discernible notes of pear if I'm remembering right) but it was never strongly fragrant for me and had quite a bit of blackspot. Mirandy: she nods her blooms (can be charming, but is usually not what people looking for a typical HT want) and was often rather pinkish for me. I think there are probably better strongly fragrant reds. (Oklahoma and Firefighter are two good ones here-Oklahoma more disease resistant, but Firefighter more productive) Sorry I don't have input on your other selections. I've read from members here that I respect that Traviata is very disease resistant (but not fragrant) and if Pink Traviata is related/a sport I'd imagine they share similar characteristics?...See MorePlease give your opinion of and experiences with these Austin roses.
Comments (12)I have John Clare and Charlotte, both grafted. Charlotte is well established, JC is one yr old. My Charlottes are reliably hardy. They are close to 4' tall, tidy growth with good foliage. I lose only a few inches of cane per winter. They have no protection, live near the edge of the road so are subjected to snow plow abuse and road salt. So for a rose that can stand up to that, they deserve a place, otoh, they are kind of boring - average and well behaved, no drama. First flush is perfectly adequate, color is a nice light yellow that doesn't turn pink and fades only slightly. the blooms have nice form and keep their shape for a reasonable time. Rain and sun tolerance is good. Repeat is about average, scattered flushes. I got John Clare because it's often praised as Austin's best bloomer. I can't argue with that. Constant color, but not my favorite color, and a bit of a plain looking bloom. I think I'm going to move them and contrast them with white. I was pleasantly surprised by the growth, which was vigorous. Mine hit almost 5', with long upright branches, bushy and even, not the well known unbalanced octopus growth. This winter was mild, and they have very little damage....See MoreKiss Me Kate
Comments (13)Nanas- very strong fragrance to my nose. Old rose scent, maybe a bit grapefruity like Jude the Obscure? I don’t get the anise notes I’ve heard about just yet, but only one other bloom semi-opened so I’ll report back if that changes. haku- she put on a ton of growth first spring/summer (2017) with no flowers and then buds this year. She’s billed as a climber so I’m trying her on a corner trellis to break up some ugly pvc stockade fence with Madame Annisette as her neighbor. The fence shades her from about 4:00 on id say? And the house blocks out direct sun early on, so she’s probably getting about 5 hours of direct a day....See Moreeveryone needs a kiss me kate
Comments (39)Mine gets full sun for most of the day, shade from about 4 o’clock on. It grows tall really fast, easily ten feet straight up under the eaves, not wider than 5 ft along the wall and I train and prune it to keep it from sticking out too far. Definitely more up than out for me. She is not flexible, so a gentle fanning out of her canes is the best I am able to do. I wish I could bend her more to encourage laterals, but I’m realizing she isn’t made for that....See MoreRelated Professionals
