Would like your opinions and experiences with these roses!
Comments (13)Bronze Star: one of the more disease resistant roses I grow (and I don't spray) and it has large blooms with a very strong fragrance. (I even grew it for 7 years on the north side of the garden in definitely part shade conditions.) Blooms last well as cut flowers (the large blooms in cooler fall weather in those golden apricot tones are especially fabulous) and a few in a vase perfume the whole room. Growing in full sun, I've seen the flowers fade out to ivory, but here in part sun they hold their color very well. Centennial Star: balled badly here. A very nice somewhat unusual fragrance (discernible notes of pear if I'm remembering right) but it was never strongly fragrant for me and had quite a bit of blackspot. Mirandy: she nods her blooms (can be charming, but is usually not what people looking for a typical HT want) and was often rather pinkish for me. I think there are probably better strongly fragrant reds. (Oklahoma and Firefighter are two good ones here-Oklahoma more disease resistant, but Firefighter more productive) Sorry I don't have input on your other selections. I've read from members here that I respect that Traviata is very disease resistant (but not fragrant) and if Pink Traviata is related/a sport I'd imagine they share similar characteristics?...See MoreHarlekin/Kiss of Desire, your experience?
Comments (11)I have grown Harlekin for a few years now and I am kind of on the fence about it. It took a couple of years to get going but now it is a very vigorous rose. The growth habit is stiff and upright so I think it would be hard to train on a fence unless the fence was very tall. It takes hard pruning so it can be kept down to 6 feet but it has the potential to become a monster if you let it go. It has bright, dark pink edges which are definitely not red. It does get some blackspot here in damp Seattle but it is vigorous enough to replace the leaves that drop off. It can be unsightly though and will have bare legs because of the blackspot. In a climate with more blackspot pressure, it might defoliate. It responds well to spraying and occasional spraying of the base leaves can keep the blackspot under control. It is pretty much in constant bloom once it gets established. But I do not love it. I just don't find the flowers to be all that pretty. They are just OK. I don't like the centers of the flowers and the flowers tend to have some brown on the edges. I consider it to be a background rose but I think it is disappointing when viewed close up....See MoreRoses Unlimited will have Kiss Me Kate this spring.
Comments (28)For those wondering about Laguna..she is a hot pink not red at all. I have her own root' came in a tiny pot. I put her temporarily into a 3 gallon and she grew her roots into the ground through the pot and I believe, has headed for China! No way is that pot coming up without a LOT of shoveling. Nematodes must not bother her. She went 12 ft in all directions and started grabbing or should I say, stabbing at anyone/thing in reach. So far she's more evil and vigorous than my Mermaid of the same size. I think Kiss Me Kate has to be a better option. I am ordering her for spring I hope she is a little better behaved than Laguna....See MoreKiss Me Kate Rose Not Flowering
Comments (13)I planted 12 on my split rail fence on front of house. Best location, full sun. They are huge and hearty and barely a single rose in second year. I'm going to move them all. It was a big mistake to plant them there. They look stupid and gangly. I have claire autins inbetween that flower all day long. I was looking for something fragrant, but whats the point if they aren't eye catching? Regret. Lots of regret....See Moresara_ann-z6bok
