many pics - china cabinet dish arrangement & $5 find
Comments (16)Hmmmmm. Don't really see a defined theme to the pics-- and there is nothing wrong w/ that. :) It's just giving me pause on what to suggest. I'll throw out a couple of ideas for you to think about. Looks like the wall on the left of the LR opening is not as wide as that on the right so forget about matching for scale. Let's try for similar colors. You could try holding up 2 of the large plates from your father in that space stacked one over the other. Does the gold in the plate compliment the print? If you like that effect, it would be easy to just hang 2 of those for now. You can always keep your eye out for something else that echoes those colors more. Something w/ more gilt on the rim or in the overall pattern? Something like a solid gold charger? Or find a couple somethings the same size/scale of the smaller print on the wall to the left of the cabinet and stack those in that space. Can't really see that print to tell what it is of. But by having 3 of those similar (but not having to match) would balance that side of the room, too....See MoreDish drawers: is it OK that it slants forward when in use?
Comments (1)This is exactly one of the things I'm afraid of. We're designing with a 30" and 36" bank of drawers - to hold dishes in one and pots/pans in another. There was a great thread here recently concerning weight in large drawers. Specifically it was about the drawer construction and the drawer sagging. You may be able to search for it. Yours may be a glide strength issue. All I know is that I don't expect my new cabinets to sag or have the drawers dip down when fully extended. Find out what your glides are rated at - strengthwise. Our are supposed to be rated either 100lbs or 150lbs for a drawer of that size (can't remember at the moment). Good luck....See MoreNo upper cabinets, thoughts on dishes/glasses
Comments (10)I stand the dishes like they are in DW inside the drawer. The reason is because I have mix and match type of dishes. I have three patterns of same "set". I like to pull out the color/combination that I like for each meal. The rack is easier than stacking them on a pile. I also put the serving plates on a rack so I can pick without going through all to get to the one I want. They are at the bottom drawer so they are lower than ideal but this was the best fit for the situation.... I stack the dessert and salad plated because I don't use them as much. Bowls are stacked. My drawers are 6/9/15 inches on the outside from top to bottom. Thet top is for flatware, small glasses, knives, cooking utensils etc. The bottom drawer is tall enough to "stand" all of my everyday plates and most serving plates....See MoreThoughts on 2-tone q/sawn oak lowers and painted uppers? X-post
Comments (7)I am a huge fan of 2 tone kitchens, but I am also biased as I have had this in my kitchen for about 8 years now. I was worried I might tire of it or it would become overly trendy, but hasn't happened yet. I also love the quarter sawn oak. I grew up in a huge old farmhouse and many of the built ins were the big old oak. I think the two would go very well together. Would it go with the rest of the house? Is your other woodwork painted? what about floors? Also meant to add that my lowers are stained charcoal, but another member here had stained wood lowers in her old kitchen that looked lovely. Maybe she will post some pics. This post was edited by daisychain01 on Thu, Jan 8, 15 at 7:34...See MoreLynne
