Yet ANOTHER sad detail in our new build
Comments (4)mae919 - so sorry to hear about this problem and you should NOT feel bad about asking for the original paln to be completed. You should have signed off on any changes or adjustments. It is YOUR kitchen, the one you will be cooking in and using long after a KD or contractor is gone - don't let someone else's mistake be your compromise. Good luck and hang in there....See MoreSad news kitchen-wise. Can't use green sink in remodel
Comments (16)The green sink is 42 inches wide. I was thinking of a 30" base with a maybe 20" (or so) wide single bowl undermount or apron sink, so there'd be a difference of about 22 inches of counter top. The open space at the end is where I was thinking of putting a raised 18" DW with a storage drawer below it. I figure at least a 2" fill on the wall side to accommodate the door trim. The window (TBA) will be somewhere in between 4 and 5 feet wide. Also considering a single deep tub DW drawer instead of the 18", fwiw. (The program DH uses for the floor plan is at least 10 years old. Pretty limited but it works for the main floor plan measurements. Putting in specific items (like a raised DW)is nearly impossible.) It seems like no matter what kitchen I've ever had, I tend to work in the same 3 feet to the left of the sink so that's what I'm trying to get. Right now in that kitchen, there is 30" to the left of the present sink and then 30" around the corner before the stove. We've been using the kitchen while remodeling the bedroom/entry side of the house this winter and I find it a bit short on space at the present measurements so I've been trying to eek out all the counter top inches that I can. Here is a pic of the kitchen as it is currently except all that 'decorative' stuff belonged to the renter and is gone. It's not the greatest pic but you can see how the general layout is. The current window over the sink is like 3' wide. The SB is currently 33" wide. I want to widen the window (just leaving 33" for 12" deep open shelves on the stove wall and then an 18" upper between the open shelves and the left of the sink and trim)and move the sink a bit to the right as this will greatly improve my view of the river. Right now I have a great view of the backyard and front of the garage and I have to lean over to the right side of the current window to see the pretty river. The counter top issue was one of the main factors in deciding months ago that the green sink wouldn't work and I guess I forgot that for a moment after Boxer posted that green sink pic. After taking some time off from obsessing on this (ok, like a day), a thought occurred: Work the layout to perfection (or as close as GW peeps can get me, lol) and then see how it 'feels' in the house as a whole as we start to finish in the other side of the house. I know just opening up the 7 ft. dropped ceilings to 9 ft. and getting new windows in the side we're working on has caused me already to rethink some things that I thought were pretty much set. Wonder if I'm getting ahead of myself and then I feel bad that I'm wasting yours and everyone else's time since I change my mind so much. Hate to become that kid that cried "Wolf" and burn out my best resource for ideas... you all! Unless, do people get insane like this during this stuff or is it just me?...See MoreSad about sink position.....pics
Comments (20)Thanks for all of the responses--It sure does make the situation better to have you all out there to help. Hopefully I can help someone else prevent this from happening to them. The sink is made to just fit a 33" cabinet. Most sinks fit for a 33" cabinet are smaller. We thought about sending it back at first but shipping would have been outrageous because it is HEAVY and I really like it. We bought an extra sink from the local store (just a regular ss)in case the granite measure people thought it was too big but they didn't see a problem with it. Looking under the cabinet there is about an inch or so that it could have been forward and I am sure they could have given me the option to shorten the lip in this case but I didn't think about. But because it is an unusual distance you would have thought that the granite fabricators would have addressed it. It should have been obvious to them. The guys who came to measure were well aware that the sink needed to be as far forward as possible. I would have went with the alternate sink if they mentioned anything about a 6.25" sink edge. If only we could go back in time. They already have all of our money. Is there any way they could shave off some of the lip w/o destroying the cabinet and polish it somewhat? I do not have a tip out drawer. I guess I could call and ask but am assuming it is impossible. Here is a link to the sink--which is awesome! http://blancocanada.com/frames/BlancoStart.htm?/pages/Catalog.htm Melanie1121: My favorite color is purple so I like Johnny the dot. Also the plumber may come this evening to address the disposal problem if he has time. The dishwasher does not leak--we just ran it b/c the electrician is here---yay!!! Thanks again everyone! Comments (39)With regard to Thermofoil option: Yikes! I have yet to see a high quality option. The product is basically a sheet of plastic, printed to look either like wood or a high gloss lacquer. The MDF or particle board door is shaped and then a heater is applied to shape the sheet of plastic over the top and around the sides of the face. It is cooled and cut off along the back edge. Any cabinet next to an oven or dishwasher, will have issues. Period. Over time the sides tend to delaminate and you will get lifting and loose looking edges. Eventually they rip. Trying to match one, if something breaks a door is very difficult and expensive. If your cabinet line offers a free touch up kit- that is wonderful! Just imagine that when your counter top is being installed, they accidentally bump a door face. This is not a warning of an inferior finish- it is a thoughtful manufacturer....See MoreMB Higgins
